Actually, pronouncing it as her-ken is just and accented slurring of the word. I actually say it as her-a-ken due to my Southern drawl.
Obviously you've never heard of the town of Hurricane. It's supposed to be pronounced "Herken." And I've never heard someone slur "hurricane" that badly. Even in Utah we pronounced it herr-i-kane.
