Well, when I first joined AG first thing I wanted to do really was join Hypermnestra's Tactics club...
But now its gone, for long
BUT THAT IS NOT THE POINT!
Point is, I am making this club, all in all I love projects, well not school projects. Projects I want to do. That is (first) why I created eco-system club, cause its a nice project I love doing!
And this is the second project I love doing: strategy, tactics, everything military involving (and yes, you might just close the page when you hear this word if you are one of those that don't like it, yes) thinking
And thats when we get to the point:
Strategy club!
This club will go like this:
Every now and then I'll post a situation, not a mission, missions will come later, I will say what generation of military technology it is, some scenarios might be in the middle ages, some might be in the future. I'm gonna say the scenario, then tell you what you have, this includes your army, and at most cases: Your tools of settlement.
When I give the scenario and your first objective (which maybe settling, building a fortress, building an army, etc.) You (hopefully) Will reply saying (IMPORTANT! When replying I expect the replies to be detailed, well thought of before posted, this is not a forum game, this is sparta, Jk, but yeah. This is Strategy club) what you do, how you use the resources and abilities I give you to reach the objective. In my response I will tell you if you are successful, if you are you reach the next step:
Tactics. This will (obviously) Involve you deploying troops and commanding an army, in this step you need to be VERY detailed, I expect that you work out what can and will happen, and counter it. If you don't, you well... Fail.
When this is done we go to the final step: The strategic council.
In this step, which I learned is important in gifted school, you will discuss your strategies with other me and hopefully other people. Note: This is by far the most important step, while the others are fun, this one lets you share knowledge, and obtain some... If this club goes on successfully, it wouldn't only be fun, it would make you far better in strategy...
To join just tell me you want to join...
Also, if you have any questions: ask me
And I believe that is all, if I haven't forgotten anything...
Right then, wanted to see that people join before I give the first scenario...
lets start! Shall we?
Scenario: You command a settling force from a major continent. That continent has two factions: The red army and the blue army. You are from the Blue army. It has recently been discovered that there is a Continent never seen before. The continent is the shape of wheel-tire, having a large circular shape with a large sea in the middle. Yet in the sea there is an island you call "middle Island", it is very small, yet in the middle of the continent and has a wide variety of hills. The sea also connects to the main ocean with a large river ships can pass through.
Goal: Your goal strategic goal is to settle on the new land, make fortresses, and eventually (that will come later) fight off the Red army.
Tech: 1600s kind of tech
Your army: You have 10 explorer ships, each with cannons and muskets in the cargo holds. On each ship you also have 20 soldiers.
Your settler force: You have 50 settler ships, each with 20 men and 20 women ready to settle the new land.
Your resources: You have enough food to feed all of your crew and settlers. You have enough building material to build 4 major fortresses.
Tips: Try to search some White settlers in America history, it could help you...
Deadline: If you really want to go deep into this I'll give you until next saturday, if not then by Feb 1.
i will try. What I would do is put the four major fourtresses near the rims on an equal distance from each other, but I will put the fourtresses about one mile away from the ocean. For the settlers i want them to settle a little behind the ring created by the fourtresses. I don't know what the climate of the continent is so if i'm allowed I'll make one up for the recources, the climate will be about 1 foot of rain a year and the seasons do change the climate. The avarage tempreture is about 65 degrees farenhite (18.3 degrees celsius) and the is alot of vegetation. The main vegetation is elm trees and moss. There are wolves so every family has a musket. Next I will place about 200 soldiers to cover the passageway connecting the main ocean to the sea. Then I will place 100 to each fourtress and the will start setting up cannons there. The rest of the soilders will set up camps and eventualy build small battlements from the resour(ces gathered by the colonists) a little beyond the ring first created by the fortresses. Also for the ships I would bring them inland and dock the on the inner rim of the main island, incase you were wondering yes, I left the middle island uninhabited. That is what I would do.

Actually that was part of it, you don't really know much about the climate
every family has a musket.
Only the soldiers have a musket

Very nice, only you forgot you have in total 200 soldiers unless you want to convery settlers into soldiers, which will cost you in resources and make the land less rich.
passageway connecting the main ocean to the sea
Nicly done.
four major fortresses near the rims on an equal distance from each other
Also nicely done.
Try to think of the environment as neutral as you can and rethink about the soldiers...
I will disembark at the river mouth joining the ocean, make camp and send 2 explorer ships to travel inland by the river. Their purpose is to scout out the territory ahead before I move in with the main fleet. This will continue until all 4 fortresses are built.
While I wait for news from the explorer ships, I will send groups of settlers in different directions to explore and record the terrain nearby. At a vantage point where I can look out to the ocean I will build my first fortress.
Fortress 1 -Stationed with 2 explorer ships and 10 settler ships -It acts as an outpost
Then I journey up the river with the rest of the fleet and build the second fortress near the bank of the middle stream, also preferably at a vantage point.
Fortress 2 -Stationed with 2 explorer ships and 10 settler ships -It acts as a staging post
Near the end of the river where it joins to the sea, I am going to do some land traveling sideways. Fortress 3 and 4 will be built, one on each side of the river. Their locations should be carefully chosen so they cannot be spotted from the river.
Fortress 3 and 4 -Each stationed with 3 explorer ships and 15 settler ships -They guard the entrance to the sea
The final thing to do is to get to the middle island and build some false settlements on it. After that everyone move back to Fortress 3 and 4.
I choose to arrange my fortresses this way because the river offers convenience of transport. This helps in communication, deployment of men and resources, retreat, etc. When the Red Army comes, all fortresses will be notified in a relatively short period. If the fortress falls, people can use the ships to escape to the next one. The false settlements on the middle island are my final card in the hope of luring the enemies into the sea. Then a blockade can be set up by Fortress 3 and 4, sealing off the only exit. They can escape by land, but then they'd have to abandon ship.
The fortresses will be surrounded by walls and settlements can be built near these. Settlers have to start making maps of the terrain, know more about the wildlife, get on friendly terms with the natives, get used to the climate, find medication for diseases, tame animals and raise livestock, build roads, establish a stable food supply and that is only naming a few.
Right, very good, you took care of most problems, there are no natives,
So I see your strategy is to stop any chance of the Red Army to get the sea, yet they can still surround the main land and start settling, yet access through the river is completely blocked by your fortresses.
Good next step (ONLY FOR WAVECREST)
Situation: You have made the fortresses and settled. The enemy army has settled a big part of the main land, yet not the island. It is dangerous and needs to be eradicated.
Goal: Settle, defend or attack the enemy, and conquer the new land.
army: all of the army you had when settling
still un-settled territories: most of the mainland.
fortresses: 4 fortresses with tall walls centered around the passage river.
I set up 4 settlements: One on the middle island and 3 branching out similar to a peace sign. The 3 branching out will have. 500 settlers with the rest in the middle settlement. Three fortresses will overlook the three branched settlements.settlements. Each will have 10 men with the rest of the men in the central fort who will be deployed when needed.
I block off all ways to get out and in except 2 in case the red army attacks. I put my Final fort at one were all incoming boats will be. I leave the river out that is closest to the top fort/settlement so we will bottleneck the enemy into the two places.
Now that the Red Army has settled, all of my fortresses are under threat because the Red Army can launch a direct assault by land on any of them, without having to travel by the river and attack them one by one. To counter this, I have to set up two lines of defense with the river in between, enclosing all fortresses and settlements and giving me a Blue Army zone. This is like cutting the Continent doughnut twice and now I have a chunk of it in my possession.
I am going to organize patrols around my fortresses to keep an eye out for spies and intruders, do fortifying work to the walls, stock up on food supplies and ammunition and produce more weapons. When the enemy comes, settlers can take refuge at the fortresses.
The cannons in cargo hold will be off loaded and set up at the fortresses. Scouts will be sent to investigate the Red Armyâs location, numbers, equipment and other such information.
The Red Army occupies a large part of the continent and its ships should be anchored along the outer coast of the occupied area. It can try to break through my lines of defense on land or send its fleet by ocean in two possible directions to attack my fortresses. When planning my attack, I have to take these moves it might make into consideration.
Attack (Sea forces)
My explorer ships will be divided into 4 groups.
Group A and B: Each consists of 3 ships. They will sail from the river into the ocean and circle round to the rear of the Red Army fleet. A will take one direction and B the other. Their mission is to attack the stationed Red fleet and intercept any incoming enemy ships that might be on the way to my fortresses.
Group C: Consists of the 2 ships stationed at Fortress A. Its mission is to provide reinforcement to A and B when needed and not to leave the river mouth completely undefended if there is a surprise attack.
Group D: Again 2 ships. They will sail from the river into the sea and cruise the inner coast. Its mission is to fire at the enemies on land and observe any move made by the Red land forces so my lines of defense can be kept updated of the situation. They won't be challenged by the Red fleet because it is still out in the ocean and have no access to the river let alone the sea.
Settler ships will be divided into 2 groups.
Group A: 30 ships. They will go into the sea and transport fighting men (originally settlers) to the right location on land.
Group B: 20 ships. They will remain stationed at the fortresses.
Attack (Land forces)
I have decided to let my 1000 man settlers take up arms because most soldiers are away on the explorer ships, and it is not very even to let the 200 soldiers do everything when there are these able bodied settlers sitting in the fortresses. Previously when setting up my two lines of defense, 100 men were stationed at each. Out of the 800 men left I will pick another 200 and put them in charge of the security of the fortresses. The 600 men left will be divided into two groups.
Each group has 300 men. They will take the Group A settler ships, sail along the inner coast, disembark near the two edges of the Red occupied area and set up two lines of assault. This ends up with the Red Army trapped by 300 men on each side.
The advantage of having control over the sea comes into play as more men can be deployed in less time to any part of the Continent by sailing. This way they don't have to take the much longer route by land and get worn out by the physical consumption or run low on supplies before even engaging the enemy.
Result
The Red Army is surrounded on all sides and challenged both at sea and on land. It can only retreat to the middle of the occupied area and my lines of assault can advance further eventually eliminating it. If it manages to break out, I have still got the lines of defense and fortresses.
Claiming the resources of the Red Army mine allows me to build more fortresses, ships and make more weapons. I can expand further and conquer the whole continent.
I will try this sometimes if I have time but this is what I would do.
I would make it seem to the red army that i have abandoned the middle island. But really i would convert some of my settlers to soldiersand teach them ambush tactics. When they begin the expand and put more of their troops toward the center i hit them in the rear with 3/4 of my troops by sea. Then my guerilla fighters cut off the resources comeing in from the other red settlments. I then reland my sea forces and return to the enemies settlements and take control of them. I conduct multiple raids on them. their soldiers of the most impourtance to me. when they are weakest I strike at the fortresses. In turn cutting them off from the mainland troops. then i wait and regain my power over the island and prod at their defenses until i find a weak point.all the while i shall keep my explorer ships with trained settlers keeping a watch on the coast line.
If any of this should cause a problem with my logic please alert me to it. I'm going to join the navy as an officer and i want to be ready when i do!
Very nice tactics, you forgot the strategy. You forgot what is your objective.
@pablo very good, look at the tactics thing I put for Wavecrest and decide what to do now.
@Wavecrest, defense
Very well done. The Red army has no way to attack you, yet it still does have a way to settle in the rest of un-captured territories; this maybe a problem. Yet you lose no men in defensive stance.
@wavecrest, offense
You did succeed; yet with many, many ships and men lost. Instead of saying just what you did right or wrong, I'll organize it:
Right:
-You have made the right tactics, circling the Red army from all sides was a very good move.
-Your forces were rightly positioned and were equal.
-Your calculations were good.
Wrong:
-The flaw was not in your tactics, it was in your over-all strategy. It is wildly known that the first most important thing in strategy is to conquer the strategic point/s. You did capture one, yet you stayed too close to it, you let the enemy take most of the land and thus gave him a strategic bonus.
-You conquered one of the strategic points, yet not the other, and so you lost many ships coming through the sea.
Neutral:
- The gorilla force was a weird idea, with the situation you had you could have got major strategic dis-advantages, yet with converting all of them to guerilla forces you have lost a lot of men, a lot of moral, and thereby; you have succeeded at defeating your enemy. Yet you have defeated yourself while doing so.
Here is a question I need to ask you:
Would you rather have a land with not many people, most are poor, yet have no enemy OR have a rich and good country with an enemy endangering your nation?
Richness vs. Safety
This is a question the president of Egypt, Mubarak, has to face this very moment, with a revolution at Egypt that is caused because of this situation.
Please think about it.
Over-all, though, you won, congratz!
Next situation either posted up today or tomorrow.
Would you rather have a land with not many people, most are poor, yet have no enemy OR have a rich and good country with an enemy endangering your nation?
If I cannot have peace and wealth at the same time, then I think it is time to take out the balance and see which one of them is heavier.
