I'm noticing a lot of good posts that have good topics and conversations are just getting locked out of the blue. Whats up with that?

The threads are probably getting locked because the users are not following the rules, the moderators found that inappropriate or one of the reasons that Matrix said happened.
Usually a mod will explain, or else they find it obvious. They won't ever lock something without reason.
