What makes something a sin? Is it because God said so? If that's the case then do Atheists have no sin? What are the exact variables that make sin what it is? I got into this discussion with a friend.

Doing something that you belive/know to be wrong/sinful or doing something that is explicitly stated as sinful is sin.

Found this list of sins as per the Qur'an.
http://www.suite101.com/content/major-and-minor-sins-in-islam-a99331

"Worshiping others, or associating partners with Allah (shirk)
Believing in superstition, fortune telling and astrology
Using magic or sorcery
Committing murder
Committing suicide
Bearing false witness
Committing adultery or fornication
Cheating, stealing, and lying
Charging or paying interest or usury (riba)
Consuming pork or alcohol
Consuming the wealth of an orphan
Not fasting for Ramadan
Not observing daily prayers
Not paying zakat (annual charity)
Gambling
Oppression and unjust leadership
Bribery, betraying trusts and breaking contracts
Backbiting and slandering
Breaking the ties of kinship
Disobeying or not honoring one's parents"

One of them did catch my eye and had me laughing a bit.
"Believing in superstition, fortune telling and astrology" Especially considering they followed it up with this one, "Using magic or sorcery".
We are talking about a religion that justifies itself with prophecy (which believing in said thing is apparently a sin) and follows a magical (magic also apparently a sin) being.

Using magic or sorcery? Reminds me how christians used to handle that.. before, believing in the existence of witches and sorcery was heretic. Then suddenly so many people went against their religion (believed in witches) that an institution, the Holy Inquisition, formed itself. Note they were high christian officials who burnt 'witches' for using 'sorcery'. Although believing in witches was supposed to be heretic.

As said before, sin is any act that goes against the morals of a religion. As most religions have basically the same fundamental morals and ideas, eg.
Christianity: Tobit 4:15 Do to no one what you yourself dislike. Confucious: Do not do to others that which we do not want them to do to us.
Hinduism: One should never do that to another which one regards as injurious to oneâs own self.
Islam: Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you.
Judaism: You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against your kinsfolk. Love your neighbor as yourself

What causes "sin" is ourselves. all of us. we were born sinful. because of the first sin of adam and eve. Philippeans 4:8 "finally brothers, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is true, whatever is excellent, admirable, or fair, and if there is to be any praise, think on such things".

accept christ, then forgiveness and God himself. I'm not saying we can't sin anymore, we still can. but God will still forgive us. accepting God brings peace to the mind and fruit to the spirit. God loves us no matter how much we sin. it also says in the bible that Jesus Christ will come back to the earth and save us. First how do we know any of that is real? I would think if it is so important then verifiable evidence should be provided first.

Lol gray wolf. But back to the original topic of what makes sin sin. Here is an equations. Mistake= Sin On purpose Accidents=sin sin sin sin. I'm tired of people calling gay people sinners and claiming that you should pray everyday because of sin. It makes people feel bad about themselves and others.

Okay managed to get it to work and it told me nothing. it did look like it had some vein attempts at scare tactics and appeals to emotion though.

Sin is a definition for an action that your religion considers "evil" or "unmoral".
