Well, I was searching to see if this was already made, but the searches didn't show a thread with my idea so here it is. I am making this thread so we can have a typical tavern discussion thread for all things science! Basically, a thread for everything science! Ranging from discussions about laws and theories, scientific debate, breakthroughs, discussion about new scientific breakthroughs, certain scientists/philosophers, and all that good stuff! So go out there and let out your inner science! ;P To get us going somewhere I'll start: what do you think the future holds for technology? I think our knowledge will allow us to overcome the obstacles thrown at us in the future, I mean, we have discovered so much and have come so far!
Well, I saw a little thread in the WEPR section about cloning lizards. They're all making it a big deal over there just because they've never heard of anaerobic reproduction before. Perhaps we could discuss types of reproduction, or natural selection, or maybe cloning attempts.

Have to agree I'm not that impressed.

That might be an interesting topic. Then again when isn't sex not an interesting topic?
Chromosomal determination of sex can be more then just the XX or XY chromosome combination. (XX is female and XY is male) There is also XX/XO with the male only having one X chromosome, this is most often found in insects. There is ZW/ZZ chromosomes in this the female has the two separate chromosomes (ZW) while the male has the double ZZ chromosomes. This is found in birds and also some fish, crustaceans and insects.
Non chromosomal determination of sex also exists, which includes egg temperature, bacterial infection, and simply being hermaphroditic (being both male and female).
One species that are hermaphrodites are snails. A snail will take turns as to who the male and female is. So if one preformed as a male the next time that snail mates it will function as a female instead.
I thought one end of the snail was male and the other end was female? I might be thinking of slugs. Whatever it is I am thinking of, they mate in a line or occasionally, they form a circle to mate.
