An earthquake of 8.9 magnitude (seventh most powerful earthquake ever recorded) struck northern Japan at 5:46 AM. It triggered a massive tsunami with waves as large as 10.6 meters. 288 people are dead and 398 people are missing. Over 100 000 people are being evacuated from northern Japan and at least a dozen countries are on alert. Some people say it will reach Hawaii and maybe even Los Angeles (that's a longshot). There have been 76 aftershocks and 16 are above 6.0. The tsunami has caused at least 2-50 landslides and the water is just wiping out people's homes.

I don't think Japan will recover from this in at least ten years. What do you think? Some people say a "supermoon" caused this, like it caused the 2005 Indonesian Tsunami. What are your thoughts on this?

People say many things. I'll just say tectonic activity caused this.

Well, this is the biggest quake in a century, but it won't kill as many people as say... the Great Kanto Earthquake. I expect recovery to definitely take a while, due to the scale of this disaster.

My condolences to the victims of this catastrophe.

Japan will recover much faster than ten years. They are not nearly as puthetic as New Orleanians (I'm from Louisiana, I know what I'm talking about) They can easily be done in three or four years. Japan is a very industrious country, America has long since ceased to be.

I believe the "supermoon" theory is complete bull **** to be completely honest.

To all those lost in and those that love those that died as a result of the eathquake, I am sincerely sorry for your loss.

I saw a video clip about this, and I thought it was horrible and insane. A lot of action was recorded.

288 people are dead and 398 people are missing.

Those numbers are increasing by the minute. The last time I checked, only 60 people were killed. So even though these people were prepared for this, not everyone will make it.

An earthquake that bad from a long time is just crazy. I hope that country will recover as quickly as possible. I also heard from a friend that there will be another earthquake happening in an African country. That might cause a tsunami of 1300+ feet coming towards the U.S. East Coast. It should occur in a few years.

Checked just now.

400 Dead, 80.000 Missing (60% of the missing are probably dead..)

The Earthquake is caused because today, the moon is closest to the Earth. Last time the moon was closest to the Earth was in 2005.

I believe that the moon is responsible for a percentage increase for the tsunami, not because of the earthquake. The earthquake was caused by plate tectonics.

Those numbers are really increasing. :O

The megatsunamis I have read on were caused by landslides, not necessarily earthquakes. There's that old prediction about a megatsunami caused by a landslide in the Canary Islands. La Palma.

It sucks for those there and those who know those living there, and for the nation in general but...it's said that 1 person dies every 5 seconds...if there are 86,400 seconds a day, that leaves 17,280 dying every day on average. We only hear about this because so many were killed at once...but really, it's a small amount. A large natural disaster happens what, once a year maybe? Possibly two? I'm not saying it's not a tragedy, but saying that many people dying is so abnormal.

thats actusally a good thing (not to be shallow) beccause, a baby is born in america (i dont know how many are in the world) every 60 seconds and we are expanding to overcrowd cities and more areas of the rainforests extramly quickly.

and heres just a related fun fact, the human race is growing at about 10% every year, faster than any other any other animal.

the earthquake and the tsunami were both bad, but that's not the worst. the worst is that several of Japan's nuclear power plants have been damaged in one way or another. this could lead to a nuclear meltdown.

my condolences for all of those who lost their lives and those who have been hurt
