DO you think that there should be stricter regulations on false advertising and certain types of advertising. In some countries, it is illegal to mention or compare the product you are selling to another. Degrading any sort of product is illegal there.

Do you think there should be stricter rules on where, how, and what a company advertises?

I fail to see what is wrong with this? They don't make any false claims.

Why is this wrong - tell me that first.

You can't really say they're encouraging an uninformed transaction, can you?

i think if a certain product *cough* chantix *cough* can make you go and kill yourself or other people it should not be available to people at all. "yea i just killed my family, and hung myself, but hey i quit smoking, so it all works out"

What I mean is, they show a mascot eating cereal and then the guy flying through the roof. It advertises the cereal but it shows unnecessary things.

OK - if they're buying it, that's their choice. Nobody forces them to do so. And, they know they're not getting a Cheetah (we hope...), so it's not false advertising.

It's their choice to buy. It's an informed transaction. It produces happiness or gain for both parties.

I remember one time I saw a commercial for Old Spice with the guy being all fancy, smoking his cigar and wearing a silk red robe. I had no idea what Old Spice was until I saw it in the deodorant section.

Well, that's Old Spice's decision. They'll try to do what they believe attracts the most customers. It's still an informed transaction.

Should companies be more direct?

Companies will try to make the most profit. If directness works, they'll do that. If it doesn't they won't.

Capitalism is a competition where companies compete to please the consumers the most.

The idea behind a really weird commercial is to get the name out there. Honestly, who hasn't heard of the Geico commercials that are really odd where they have a guy ask a question and then do a stupid skit about what he said? Or the Old Spice Guy for that matter? It is just so the name of the company gets out there and becomes like family. Then people will be more likely to buy the product.

This is a very informative link. It answers most of your questions...

I think the worst advertising is for medication. You shouldn't advertise drugs to people who most likely have no idea what the consequences could be, and what it may benefit, and really, who goes to their doctor and asks about Cyclofeten or some seeming randomly named drug. It's also amusing to hear the 10 second word gush of side effects, and in depression medication's case, there's an INCREASED risk of death by suicide? Seems like it doesn't wrok very well then does it?
