Should students pay consequences when their children break the law?

I say no because the child should be old enough to know between right and wrong. Also, there's no wrong way of parenting. The parent can be absolutely agreat on raising his/her child, yet the child still commits a crime.

Any opinions on this?

I assume that was supposed to be parents?

It depends on the circumstances and age of the child, but generally no.

Yeah. Sorry for the mistake.

Let's say the child's 14-16 years old. He commits a serious crime of murder. Should the parents go to jail just because the child made a poor decision and why?

I'm going to tie the kid up with duct tape and keep him in a small closet until he's an adult.

I don't see much of a point in it. Yes the child's living conditions which include the parents should be looked into. If abuse is found that that contributed to the child's behavior those charges should be held with max penalty.

At around 12 children should become legally responsible for their actions. You should not throw a 5 year old in jail for something they did not understand was wrong but you cant yet 16 year olds get away with crime.

I think that parents should be FINED when a kid does something thats agianst the law that requires a fine but if it's something that could put you in jail, I agree with the 14 or older rule.

I don't know about anyone else but I had a pretty good idea of what was right/wrong at age 5. Definitely most of the majors were covered, and a lot of the minor "wrongs."

The parent shouldn't be fined/jailed unless the crime was racist in nature or something akin to that, something that has obviously been indoctrinated into the kid.

This. The parents should not be held accountable (unless they contributed to the crime in some way) once the child turns 10-13.

If a child ever commits a crime, there should be an investigation into his home life. How his parents treated him, his living condition, etc. Most childhood crimes that I've seen are the result of being in some kind of gang. Usually, when a kid enters a gang, that means his parents are abusive, or they are under the poverty line, etc... so then the gang makes him commit a crime.

A different way to look at it is that preteens to teens are in the phase of trying to fit in. If they come from a broken home, they feel like an outcast. They feel like they're different because they come from a broken home, and everyone else seems like they're family is so perfect. Most gangs are made because of other teens that come from broken homes, and they have to fend for themselves. They accept the kid (usually through some initiation crime). This is when the kid gets caught.
I've seen 13 year olds with guns and fully involved in gang activity. I really pity them, but at the same time, the parents should receive some kind of guidance counseling or some form of mandatory program so that they can improve their homelife for their children. If they don't make so many classes, or if something happens, then their child gets put into protective service.

Only if the parent willingly and knowingly helped should they be jailed. If a fine would be placed on a minor, it should be transffered to the parents/gaurdians/whatever of the child for fairly obvious reasons.
