Well, starting around 2 (possibly 1) month early. I guess this is for next year. Start sending secret admirer letters to your friend. As the days get closer to April 1st, make the letters more....stalker like. Put your friend's phone number, or favorite color or address in the letters to freak him/her out. On March 31st or April 1st send a really creepy message about coming/ or planning to come visit him/her. On April 1st say it was you all along.

It was his evil plan to ultimately fire himself. It was a genius plan, he just did it at the wrong time.

Since he supposedly quit, he can't come up here and stand up for himself for at least another 36 hours.

Here's a nice prank: if you see a flyer with a phone number or an email on it, sign up for something. Anything. Be creative with it. Just make sure it isn't something that will ultimately get you in trouble with the law (or someone more dangerous).

One of my friends actually did that to another one of my friends, but found out just a week ago. So much for that joke :/
