Megamind

Starring: Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, David Cross, Ben Stiller

Rated: PG for action and some language

Runtime: 95 Minutes

Info: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1001526/

Cast: A

This is definitely a decent cast of comedic actors. Tina Fey and Will Ferrell steal the show with Jonah Hill, Brad Pitt, and David Cross bring up the strong rear. The comedic styles of Will Ferrell and Tina Fey shine through and the voiceover work is superb.

Characters: B-

Let's start with the title character. Megamind is an egotistical villain with a love for causing mayhem and battling his arch nemesis, Metro Man (Brad Pitt). Will Ferrell puts a nice touch on the character giving him a loving persona. However, too much of this character screams, "EVERY CHARACTER WILL FERRELL HAS EVER PLAYED!". Tina Fey plays our starring, "damsel in distress", news reporter, Roxanne Ritchie. Roxanne is a defiant woman who will do anything to get to the bottom of things. She's lovable, rebellious, and fun to watch. Metro Man, played by Brad Pitt, is Megamind's arch nemesis. He has all of Superman's powers without the weakness to Kryptonite. You don't get to see much of him, but, he's a lot of fun to watch. The minion (David Cross), Hal (Jonah Hill), and Bernard (Ben Stiller), are smaller characters that end of up playing a big role in the overall picture. The Minion is Megamind's sidekick and pretty funny. Hal is the cameraman for Roxanne and has a major crush on her that pushes him over the edge. Bernard is an intellectual that Roxanne falls for. Overall, the characters are fun to watch, but, lack depth and dimension.

Plot: B+

The plot of the movie is fairly simple: Megamind and Metro Man are two aliens from a different planet that landed on Earth at the same time. Megamind tried to fit in but couldn't. Thus, he thought it would be easier to become a villain so that he and Metro Man would be in heated battle for all time. However, Megamind finally discovers Metro Man's weakness, kills him, and takes over the world. Now, Megamind runs the world and there is nobody around for him to battle. He grows bored with being supreme ruler of the world and starts to look for another nemesis. Thus begins the REAL heart of Megamind and the search for purpose in the world. The plot never becomes convoluted and sticks to the simplicity of matters.

Animation: A

I wanted to see this in 3D, however, it wasn't offered at the movie theatre I saw the show at. It was very clear which moments in the movie would have been shot in 3D, but, seeing it in 2D didn't take away from anything. It is Dreamworks after all, so, the animation was spot on.

Overall: B+

After watching movies like Shrek, Shark Tale, and Kung Fu Panda, it's clear that this movie isn't on the same level as them. The animation is great, the story is well written, and the voiceover work is good. However, it's clear that the laughs in this movie were designed for very young children. There were some good moments that had me smiling, but, I never legitimately laughed. The story's fun to watch, the animation and small battle sequences are cool, but, overall, it's just not Dreamworks' best work.

Minion was probably one of the ONLY good parts of this movie for me. Other than that, I found myself constantly bored.

it was alright, but i found that the story was some of the same cut and dry "humorous story's for kids with a moral at the end."
but it had at least a couple of good moments. but you actually had to care if you wanted to see them.
