Because those threads are so very old that there is no need for them to be open. Also, the question of the thread could've been answered and it got locked for that reason.
Matrix is right, the locked threads are gonna be on the last pages because no one can reply to them to get them on the first pages. There is nothing unusual about it. Its just the way it goes.

To add to that, there are so many of them because every topic ever created since this forum opened that has not been completely deleted still exists. And, naturally, the locked topics will be pushed to the back as new topics pop up, or other topics are replied to. I suppose we could just outright delete the threads, but it would eliminate all of the posts and associated points if we did so.
