So? I was against fossils fuels to begin with.

And this isn't a valid point. Saying it was just an accident is like saying if a drunk driver kills a little 8-year old girl and then says: "It was just an accident!"

And why are you so defensive to a blood-thirsty corporation?

I don't really hate BP, I just feel they should be held responsible for their actions. And the US Gov. giving them tax breaks isn't really the best PR thing to do right now.

Like it or not, money makes the world go round. And who is a large provider of this money? Corporations. USSR tried to do away with the Corporations, and look where that got them.

I think Lolynage's point is that there ARE alternate fuel sources, and they aren't inefficient like they used to be. We don't "have" to have any fossil fuel corporations anymore, they are still around because of the massive weight they throw against the opposition.

If these alternative energy sources are better than Fossil Fuel corporations, one would think that they'd outcompete them in a capitalistic economy.

The main problem is refuiling stations. There are already thousands of gas stations, but not one supplies any other forms. Also, the auto market produces primarily vehicles that run on gasoline. I have not extensively looked into the subject, so I do not know whether or not it would be more efficient that gasoline, but they are more than good enough to run on effectively now. Also, gas will only become more and more expensive, so eventually, it will be cost-effective to switch.

Then, I don't see the need to switch immediately - the consumers will inevitably determine when a switch is cost-effective.

There is no economic reason to switch immediately true. Which is why it has not yet happened. Although I think it would be nice to stop fighting over oil and, however minimally, stop polluting via emmitions from cars.

Than rather than looking to foreign countries for Oil, why don't we drill in the Oil Reserves the US has? ANWR, Gulf Coast, etc, all have extensive amounts of oil, and yet the same people who won't let drilling here take place complain about our dependance on oil.

There may also be issues with corruptness of politicians that could be preventing us from switching to "green" energy sources. But we do need to make the move away from fossil fuels soon.
In a previous BP oil spill thread, kyouzou and I were discussing how google researched a car that was computer run. The car itself was still run on fossil fuels, but with a computer driving the car, gas milage would go up, as there would be less errors in the way the car was driven.

Perhaps a more competent business would have prevented it - there is no reason for government sponsorship to create a government-run monopoly.

Oh, I have nothing against the concept of a corporation. But the government let's the corporations build in a ecological area, the measures to prevent a disaster wasn't good enough because of costs. Pretty greedy if you ask me. If they want to make money, at-least do it in a save way

Like i said, political corruption.

I believe that one of the main issues of the spill was that the clean-up procedures that were government approved were from the 80's. And then it took them forever to find any solution to the leak. Obviously, an overhaul is needed in oil industry regulations.
