I was thinking on forum boxes, like this one I'm typing in, of having a row of smileys somewhere, which in the post show up, like when you have italics you have this symbol:[i]. But when it comes up, it comes up in italics. Basically it would say something like this in the box: , but would come out as a round face. Would this not be cool?
I don't like the idea of having smileys on the forums. People would start spamming them around the forums and I personally don't like those little yellow smileys. Once in a while they're fine, but I wouldn't appreciate seeing them everywhere. If the smileys are colorless then I still see no point in having them. You could simply use the original text ones.
So I find it rather easy to stick to the traditional text smileys:

I don't know why people would start spamming smileys through the forums if they don't do it now with text smileys. And what is the problem with colorful smileys? I personally think they would fit well in the new style of AG3 messaging on other people profiles. And it would make text happier than the simple and black texts we have now.
I think the option should be available to people who use them in moderation, and don't spam them all the time even after they EARN them. And if such a system be implemented, that smilies can also be in the traditional text like and XD etc. But only if the people worked hard to earn them, and they don't spam them later on. This will also encourage users to work harder towards smilies.
And, an option for people who dislike them- to trigger some sort of option so that they view it as text even if it's a technical smiley.
