According to the official PS3 blog, nobody seems to know exactly what's wrong.

Well, I've read that they've gotten hacked again. PSN should be up tomorrow, from what I've read.

If your going to hack somebody hack Microsoft servers, they charge for there service.

Probably Anonymous being a bunch of ****muppets again. Might be maintenance, but I have a feeling it's just a bunch of kids messing about with the server.

actually, coming straight from the playstation blog, they say

"An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share."

I just wish that they would fix it already

Anonymous is claiming they have nothing to do with it (though there are apparently fractured groups that may or may not have been involved with Anonymous who are doing less than helpful hack jobs in the name of freedom). I am actually looking into this for an article soon because the rumor is that people with converted PS3s may have found a way to steal PSN content, which is why Sony shut things down themselves.

Either way, as gamers we all need to do a better job of reporting suscpicious activity as well as letting these hackers understand that we don't agree with their supposed cause. Transperancy is one thing but the goal of chaos won't benefit anyone.
