Is everyone equal? If not, should everyone be given equal opportunities? Does everyone get an equal chance to do something?
I think that whether people want to acknowledge it or not, people are not equal. Some born better in things than others, I may stink at singing, but my friend is amazing since childhood. Some people are naturally good at these things. I am not saying anyone can never excel in anything they want, but some people naturally are good at it. Think of it as a head start on that skill, they may be good, but maybe they improve slowly. Everyone shouldn't be given an equal chance for something, because in a way they are. It's how you do in school and college that is everyone's chance to do something. An automotive shop is most likely not going to give a person who spent 4 years studying automotive technology a chance to see if they aren't as good as some dude who shows up, they are just going to take him.
Everyone seems hooked about killing since the other Christianity thread, anyways... Do you believe everyone is born equal, and/or while we live? We are equal when dead (Some religious groups may argue), but what gives one the right to kill everyone, is he greater than the others that he should be able to kill them?
I think that everybody is different but not necessarily better. I mean men and women usually have different personalities but this doesn't make either of the better. When you are born some people have special talents and some have specially developed brains that make them cleverer in specific subjects.
Is everyone equal? If not, should everyone be given equal opportunities? Does everyone get an equal chance to do something?
As said in George Orwell's novel Animal Farm:
"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."
Anyways, I don't think everyone is treated equally, bit I think the situation is constantly improving. Prejudice seems to be worst in countries with strong religious beliefs claiming another person's lifestyle or origin automatically makes them bad people, like homosexuals. Now, of course not all religious people are close-minded and prejudiced, because you would have to be very prejudiced yourself to think that was true, I'm just saying that in a country where these religious beliefs are popular, that prejudice is not discouraged in the same way. Though, this mostly applies to homosexuals, as few religions encourage xenophobia, but that doesn't make it any less of a problem in my opinion.
No one is equal, we are all different in some way, but those differences should not be made a criterium for getting something or not, or having a certain right or not. Everyone should be treated equally, or rather, equitably.
All men are not born equal - there can not be true equality because everyone possesses different talents and ability levels. It would be wrong to waste time and effort giving opportunities to those who could not probably take advantage of them - let the world be a meritocracy and the most fit and suitable will find themselves playing the right roles.
let the world be a meritocracy and the most fit and suitable will find themselves playing the right roles.
It's a pleasing thought -- only if in this godly meritocracy there is safety for all people to express their talents and ability levels. I'm sure poverty/disease/racism/war/hate of a minority/whatever has, over time, killed scientists, astronauts, basketball players, and presidents to be, just because of unfair treatment.
Is everyone equal? If not, should everyone be given equal opportunities? Does everyone get an equal chance to do something?
Yes, everyone should be considered equal. No, not everyone has equal opportunities or an equal chance to do anything.
Some born better in things than others, I may stink at singing, but my friend is amazing since childhood.
Lets say that you got the same opportunities to practice singing as your friend. You would then be as good as your friend. Your friend was probably trained, weather formally in a school setting or informally by just listening or singing along to music.
Some people are naturally good at these things. I am not saying anyone can never excel in anything they want, but some people naturally are good at it
Examples, please? From what I can see, it is mostly want and physical ability that lead it. If you want to sing, like singing, and practice a lot, you are labeled "A natural". You are not, however, born with the great ability to sing, you need to acquire it threw training.
Everyone shouldn't be given an equal chance for something, because in a way they are. It's how you do in school and college that is everyone's chance to do something.
If you are able to go to school, are not labeled as good or bad in school, and come from an at least semi-wealthy society, then it is. But for much of the world, that isn't the case. Some kid's can't go to school. Kids get labeled, and usually end up being a self fulfilling prophecy. If your are born to a poor migrant worker, you are not going to go to school, not going to collage, and are probably going to end up a migrant worker as well. If you are born to a rich billionaire, then you will get an excellent education and excel, probably getting in the best collage an following in the footsteps of your parents.
An automotive shop is most likely not going to give a person who spent 4 years studying automotive technology a chance to see if they aren't as good as some dude who shows up, they are just going to take him.
And how did that guy get so good? Experience. He had studied more, probably in practical usage. He probably grew up around machines. He doesn't just come out of the womb knowing these things, he is interested in it so he studies it, or he needs it so he studies it.

And what if the friend just had a lot better voice. No amount of training can change that. Someone born with a good voice could be considered naturally good. Also, are you really saying that no person is any better than another in different things? Some people are naturally athletic and good at sports even if they never train. Others sit in the weight room and practice a lot and still can't compete.
How far should people be allowed to persue equality? If all people are equal when they are dead, should we be allowed to kill others in the name of equality? But than who would decide who shall be the killers, and who the victoms? Wouldn't that make them 'more equal'?
Equality is a great thing to persue, but we should do so carefully, so as not to become tyrannacle ourselves.
On a side note, has anyone read the short story 'Harrison Bergeron'?

That would be the thing I mentioned, physical difference of your vocal chords. It would be one of the few things that could be considered "Unequal", the other being mental capacity.
Someone born with a good voice could be considered naturally good
Not if they haven't had any training or listened to a song before, they would probably have no rhythm and the voice would be worse than yours, if you had trained enough.
Some people are naturally athletic and good at sports even if they never train.
They train aspects of it. Other sports with similar things, like running or passing, count as training, as well as just watching sports could be considered training. The other is physical aspects, in which people are slightly unequal.
Others sit in the weight room and practice a lot and still can't compete.
Nope. If you trained a lot, you would be able to beat someone who never trained.

I would listen to someone without rhythm with a beautiful voice over someone who had horrible voice attempt to sing. Plus, what are the chances that they never listened to a song?

Then technically you are training your whole life just by being alive. This argument is irrelevant. All I was saying is that yes people are not born physically equal. You did not make that very clear in your original post but I see that now. So basically yes we agree.
Nope. If you trained a lot, you would be able to beat someone who never trained.
Again this goes back to almost everyone training themselves athletically just by being alive and playing games or as you call it training "aspects of it".
On a side note, has anyone read the short story 'Harrison Bergeron'?
I saw the trailer and read the story. It really shows that people arn't the same. And it's obvious they shouldn't be made or treated the same. We should generally look at people as our equals and treat them fairly. And what i thought to be crazy was that the goverenment made everyone equal except for themselves. They were the only ones allowed to be better.
I think that whether people want to acknowledge it or not, people are not equal. Some born better in things than others, I may stink at singing, but my friend is amazing since childhood. Some people are naturally good at these things.
These "things" are not natural equality. Nature made you to survive the longest time possible, not to play piano like a pro. So yea, everyone is equal, if someone with a huge talent would die, it would be sad and a lost for society, but not for nature, life would just move on. There is no one that is above anyone else, even if they think they are.
