PSN Down: Sony Announced Compensation Plans, Hopes To Have Full PSN Restored By End of Month
Things just keep getting worse for Sony. Only one week after the first class action lawsuit was filed against Sony due to their massive security breach resulting in a PlayStation Network outage, a second one has been filed in Canada for the tiny amount of $1 billion. Toronto law firm McPhadden Samac Tuovi LLP is filing against Sony Japan, Sony USA, Sony Canada, and "other Sony entities", saying that due to breach of privacy Sony must pay their client for the "costs of credit monitoring services and fraud insurance coverage for two years".
Their client is a young lady named Natasha Maksimovic, a 21-year-old from Mississauga. Maksimovic said in a statement, "If you can't trust a huge multi-national corporation like Sony to protect your private information, who can you trust?" and went on to say, "It appears to me that Sony focuses more on protecting its games than its PlayStation users."
While the first lawsuit filed against Sony did not admit the amount in damages that the Rothken law firm expected from Sony, the $1 billion price tag this time around seems like stretching it a little, don't you think?
*sigh* I really was hoping for Sony to aid Microsoft against the upcoming wrath of "Wii 2: The HD Revenge" but thanks to Anonymous (NICE NICKNAME THERE BRO!) Sony might just their ***** lawsuited out of the video game market altogether! (that might be an exaggeration, but I'm worried!)
Despite that, I'm actually white enough to own all 3 consoles (my preference is the Xbox 360) and was looking forward to Infamous 2 and Heavy Rain (still haven't gotten that one... the PS3's new) but now get the itch for Killzone 3's multiplayer everytime i look at the **** thing, I just get bummed out.
what i don't get is the motives behind this dude Anonymous. Why is he doing this? Is he a hardcore Xbox 360 fan that wants to see Sony wiped from the face of the console wars? Probably not, that hypothesis is the first apparent one, but a look back at it seems too sophomoric to face the reprocussions of systematically taking down a multi-billion dollar corporation.
Another theory is the wealth. Do you know how many credit card numbers this dude has? Do you know what kind of coin that is if he just takes 200 US dollars from each one? Let's put it this way, he won't be begging to pay off that 4th home on the Planet Zalthar.
I think this guy's your average, run of the mill, anarchist. Corporations are large businesses that encompass huge amounts of the industry. It's not like there are 25,000 different kinds of video game consoles for us to pick and choose from like DVD/ Blu-Ray players - Video games are powerful hardware, and the eternal number 3 fits the market well. Corporations represent order, a uniformed sense with the added spice of competition.
On the extremely off chance that Sony does collapse because of this mishap and the proceeding lawsuits, the industry will suffer a hard hit, and it might just cause the whole thing to crumble. maybe not immediately, but over time, lower-quality products may become the norm, as a result of the lowered competition, and as Sega will probably try to reinstate themselves in the console market, they would create a product that would not fill the void that the PS3 took as a viable opponent for the Xbox 360. The aggregate quality would deteriorate, and eventually, the video game market would collapse.
Maybe that's a bit too doomsayer-ee, but as an Xbox fanboy, i'm rooting for every yard gained by Playstation against this monstrous criminal.
Maybe Sony will be hurt by this, but I don't think they'll completely sink. After all, they do sell more than Ps3's. I personally have an xbox (I think that xbox's are junk, but it's my junk) and for the longest while, it seemed like Ps3 had the edge. Now, though I'd say xbox takes the lead because at least it wasn't hacked.
o i have heard the reson they hack is cauz sony did somthin to two of there members. it said the "brought it legal" or somthing like that. so i guess sony sued them. also, annonomis is said to NOT have been the hacker. my opinion, THIS SUCKS! i just got my ps3 and i can`t play? what up with that? no online multiplay FOR A MONTH? come on!
I'm glad Sony is getting sued for this. This was a major issue and those cheap stupid radio edits should have protected all the user's information. I don't own a Playstation3. And that is the reason why. They suck at privacy. And keeping everyone's information private.

The amount of objectivity in this boy's post is so staggering! He loves the consoles so much that he gives the pseudo-underdog, the Wii, just as much attention as the other two not-as-successful consoles. My helmet and axe go off to ya, laddie!
On the extremely off chance that Sony does collapse because of this mishap and the proceeding lawsuits, the industry will suffer a hard hit,
Only Sony Corporation will suffer a hard hit. Console/Software sales will shift over to the remaining three choices: Wii, PC, and 360. But it's not like Sony will be snuffed out. It's not like Sony is just the owner of PS3, Blu-ray, and the licensed PS3 game distributor; Sony also owns many different pieces of varying hardware, which is doing very well, might I add. If anything, their video game competition will suffer a major drawback, but everything else that they manufacture will stay afloat.
and as Sega will probably try to reinstate themselves in the console market, they would create a product that would not fill the void that the PS3 took as a viable opponent for the Xbox 360.
Au Contraire, Sega was doing VERY well before they unleashed the Dreamcast. In fact, the Dreamcast was well before the PS2, Gamecube, and the fourth competitor, the Xbox, meaning their hardware was vastly superior. They just didn't get as much sales, so they were snuffed out. If PS3 really does go under and the Dreamcast distributes consoles again...
...expect Sega/Nintendo/Microsoft duels being fiercely fought.
The aggregate quality would deteriorate, and eventually, the video game market would collapse.
To say Sony as a whole will collapse is a little far fetched. After all, they also lead in the production of TVs, Blu Ray/DVD Players, and other technology. So they'll probally take a significant hit from this, I don't think they'll go completely under.
Sony might get hurt a little, like some other guy said, but I seriously doubt their whole PS3 Company will collapse. But it is pretty major. BTW, Who was the guy who hacked PSN? I heard it was some 19 year-old kid or something.
The chances of Sony losing this case are slim to none considering the amount of lawyers they can hire. Besides for that 1 billion dollars is way to much.
