What game? Is it Hack Slash Crawl or maybe some Castaway?

Vulcan, the final boss, is a Giant FireStarter with an armoured head. So you can only hurt him by hurting him from behind.

i was actually pretty disappointed with vulcan....... i chose the &quothysical aspect" of the game over the magical, and i completely demolished him...... good game though....

X is your pet, Q is vulcan, Y is you, you should beat him like this

X->Q<-Y

Like if you attack Vulcan from opposite directions, he should be defeated really fast because Vulcan can be hurt only from behind. So without a pet this game will be impossible to beat.
