Have any of you ever seen "Starship Troopers"? If you haven't I suggest getting it. Hugely stupid, hilarious movie.
Anyways, in that movie, the military is comprised of billions of people that have to serve a military term of ten years to become citizens. When you become a citizen, you get the right to vote in politics. If you don't serve, you don't become a citizen, and you cannot vote in politics.
My question to the people of AG is, would this work, and if so, what impact would it have on society?
I think it would fail. 1) We'd lose a lot of immigrants. 2) Ten years?! Education would die. 3) The only benefit of being a citizen is voting in this scenario? I'd like to keep my left nut, thanks. 4) Drafts have, historically, been unpopular. 5) We'd have so many people in the military, I feel that we wouldn't have enough people adding to our GDP, leading to a poor country, and a poorly equipped military -- somewhat like Russia's Red Army in WWII that got slaughtered, despite it's 5.5 Million manpower.
10 years! That's way too much. But I'm pretty sure either all the people (or most) would leave. Or an upraising could easily start. Either way, a nation that force people to do military service to join won't last long.
Anyways, to the idea of ten years, I also thought that was too long. Maybe a shortened time, say two or three. Also, the military provided education so there wouldn't be a bunch of idiots...
