I have been on this site for a while, only recently finding out about the community forums, and i still havent figured out what merits are or how you earn them. I have a few friends who have earned merits, and it just confuses me
Merits are earned by making thoughtful comments in the commenting area of games. This is an exact phrase used in the help section:
On each userpage, there is an area that numbers how many merits you have earned. Merits are earned by writing constuctive,original, and thoughtful comments in the Games section. We reward those who take the time to think out a good comment, as it contributes a lot to the website and sets a good example for others. The post does not have to be a book in length, but should be interesting enough to grab our attention. For each merit you recieve, you will earn 25 AP and your post will stand out. Only moderators and administrators give out merits.
Do not bug the moderators or admins to give you merits. They will most likely be sad for the rest of the day if you do.

It doesn't. That thread that linked to in my first post on the thread answers the question very well. It tells you how to write your comment. Also, you can get a merit rewarded for winning a contest in the AMW sub-forum if the contest rewards a merit.
