M16A1 sucks. It jams a lot and the plastic stock makes it impractical as a bayonet weapon. The VC never took them from dead American soldiers. That is pretty bad if the enemy doesn't take your gun. The M16A2 was a bit better though. You want good assault weapons? Steyr Aug or AK-47.
The AK-47 is indeed a good gun. But not because of the power or accuracy.
It is very popular because of 2 things: - It is very cheap. - You can put it through water or mud or lots of other nasty stuff and it will still work perfectly. You can even bury it for 10 years and it will probably still work.

Sorta. You can sign up for a license to get a weapon with full-auto capabilities. However, theres extensive back ground checks, etc, so I can't get one 'just for fun'.
My personal favorite is the Ruger Blackhawk .44 magnum. Fits my hand like a glove, always accurate with its sights and I feel like Dirty Harry when I shoot it.
