Do not backseat mod. Instead of doing so, I will say this:

You crossed the road to get to the other side.

Patrick crossed the road so he could say "I just crossed this road" afterwards to everyone.

Ernie crossed the road because he forgot to grab his big stamp that says "I came in third." :P
