Is that why people started to say it?

most likely not, it most likely originally a prayer, as was Jesus Christ probably some sort of prayer, like oh my god please forgive or save me or something, the same when people say Jesus Christ, forgive me

which probably just developed and got shortened into saying oh my GOd

i higly doubt that people who say it in the sense you mean know the ten commandments,
when they say oh my god when affraid, they turn to god for safety

at leasts thats one way to explain, more likely is that it has simply become commen enough for people to stop wondering what they are saying

I think it started with people saying "(My) god, (please) help me/us" or something similar when in danger or when hearing something awful; it was as protection. Now for many people it's nothing more than a linguistic remnant, as a kid you learn that many say that in certain situations, and probably start saying the same things in similar situations, without being aware of where it came from.

I concur with HahiHa. It was most likely people saying something like Please help me God, and then it just evolved over time.

That, or some satanists just decided to start saying "Oh my God" in order to break the 10 Commandments to pieces! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...I mean...that would never happen.

Well at least in Judaism, God isn't Gods name so your not saying his name in vain.

I just use "oh my God" to express disbelief or annoyance. I never connect it to a religious reason, just use it as an expression. I don't know anyone who does it to mock God.

seems to me that overtime, people started shortening the question "my god, why are you allowing me to suffer" until it was too short to be considered respectful. that's just my speculation, but I'm sure somebody else agrees with me.

I just use it as an expression. I have never once thought of breaking the ten commandments when i have said 'oh my god'. People probably say it because everyone else does, it is a commonly used expression and most people probably aren't even aware they are using it.

It is a cultural phrase that has lost all religious correlation. I say it if I am really exasperated.

I don't think so, oh my God is a phrase that expresses surpise and utter disbelief. Nowadays it usually describes excitement (OMG). It has absolutely nothing to do with the commandments, if they broke a commandment then they would go to the church and beg for forgiveness.
