I'm not so sure it would have helped much.

I think that they are just as sick and tired of this nonsense as we are and probably ready to sit down to some peace talks.

They said all along they didnt want the west interfering in the easts affairs.

We view this with a fisheye lens pointed by embedded journalism.

hmmmm... The way the report says:

The US is engaged in talks with the Taliban, Afghan President Hamid Karzai has said, in the first high-level confirmation of US involvement.

followed by
Hours later, suicide bombers attacked a Kabul police station, killing nine.

reminds me of the peace talks with Japan before Pearl Harbor.

Yeah.... No. They're revolutionaries, not suburban daddies.

I can see us there until like... 2014?

Any news on how far we have gotten?

If you beak the back of the organization, the members will lose collaboration. It will cause them to devolve from a terrorist organization to a few bands of rogue terrorists.

Even with peace talks there will still be extremists who won't pay attention. Sadly the war on terrorism has been around forever and will continue to be around. If not with the Taliban, with some other organisation.

I doubt they will stop. It's against their religion to stop. If you told someone don't pray to god, they still would because it's what they believe in.

Aren't a few bands of rogue terrorists almost worse because they are less predictable, less controlled?

But see, this is the confusion. We are not breaking their backs. It is true, they have lost many since 2001 after America went crazy status in Afghanistan.
But look deeper into it, I've seen wikileaks videos and CNN reviews where drone attacks misfire, where people see cameramen and shoot them.

In all honesty, if terrorists are so small in numbers as many tell us they are -- why do they keep coming back? This organization is finding new members because we are doing what we have always done in the region, assert our control with military power. By doing so, we piss people off, we make them hate America, we make them lose their homes and look towards religion, which makes them vulnerable to having their religious beliefs twisted.

Honestly, would you rather be a poor farmer or a boss-status revolutionary fighting on the side of God against the most powerful country on earth?
Option two sounds kinda cool

I just have a feeling that the Taliban will always find ways to grow, and because of that, these peace talks won't go to smoothly. Otherwise why did this war last so long? If we keep doing what we've been doing I doubt we're to make progress.

I'd rather have them blow up their country than ours.

The Taliban isn't a terrorist group, by the way. They're a genuine political group in Afghanistan and Pakistan who like to harbor terrorist groups, but in general the Taliban like power more than chaos and death. This makes them rational.

The group as a whole isn't going to be very happy with the talks in the end, however. Something tells me they get some land in return for "Don't execute people by stoning, don't behead foreign business men, don't shoot thirty people at a time, don't hang suspected traitors without a trial, don't loot and burn heroin plantations, don't shoot people for fun, don't harbor terrorists, and stop shooting at us. Kthnxbai."

Where they get five square miles.

Yes, this is typical western 'eace talks.'

You can never stop extremeists, especially the passionate ones, these guys were literally brought up believing violence was Gods will. If you grow up with these things in your head it is hard too get them out.

It's like telling an elderly person devoted to the church to stop praying. It won't work. It'll just make them mad.
