I'd say fire. Since ya' know, you need fire to cook things and for heat so you can survive.

Life. Life created the wheel, fire and sliced bread.

Life has been around for a long time, though. Bread was invented by a person, so a person could be the best thing. But we are talking about inanimate objects, or something like that.

The best thing before... hmm....

I would have to say... trees.
