Do you think the government has ever played a role in covering up something?
Look up US imigration laws. If you were judged only on lineage, I'd be German even though I've never been in Germany. And technically if English parents had a kid overseas in America, he would have joint citizenship.

They cover a lot of stuff. For some reason, they hope that by hiding something about the government, they'll gain the trust of the public.
The government covers up a lot. In certain cases, it's a good thing. But more times than not, it has led to horrible acts. Genocide being one of them.
