.....this isn't exactly something you can vote on people. >_>
It's these franchises:
Mario Pokemon Tetris Wii Sports (both of them combined) Mario Kart Zelda Donkey Kong Wii Fit (again, both of them) Kirby Smash Bros. (and again all 3 of them) Nintendogs Metroid
Mario may be a widespread icon but i dont really think the game series is that popular i mean everyones heard of george washington too but hes not as "opular" as any nubmer of rap artists personally i think super smash bros is one of the best things that nintendo made and pokemon is right up there with it. mario not so much unless ur a casual gamer

Yeah....because it's not like Mario is the best-selling video game franchise ever.

Mario selling huge numbers --> lots of people buy it --> lots of people like it --> it is popular
Not to mention the fact that people these days would call friggin Super Mario Bros. a "casual game" is one of the weirdest and silliest things ever.
Side note: I dare say more people like George Washington than rap artists.
the fact that george washington is more prevalent among people is impossible to dispute and by your definition you obviously win the argument as he who frames the terms inevitably wins the debate unless the person in question (you) is a moron. however as the notion of popular culture goes both george washington and rap artists fit the definitions of widely accepted but widely liked is a different matter. many people are less than fond of our first president because he owned slaves and in general was a less than perfect human being. however, george washington does not reflect the taste of the people at large. i supose that specifying rap artists was a bad choice as i was attempting to provide a specific example of widely accepted and well financed music artists. most likely the beatles would have been a better example. i would like to point out that by your derinition toilet paper is most likely more popular than either george wasington or rap artists because it is purchased in large quantities due to its common use for hygene and it fits more of the techincal definitions although for some reason it is not considered "opular". it is my conclusion that you almost certainly meant your response to be taken as a stinging put down and i apreciate your extreme courtesy in pointing out the flaws of refusing to generalize because in a debate falacies to not matter if they apeal to pathos or ethos. i dont care otherwise i would avoid technical and intelectual diction like the plauge in order to be seen as a representative of the average person. i stand by my characterization of Super Mario Bros as a casual game and if you belive i am silly i will admit that you are completely entitled to your wrong opinion. i do however thank you for your concern about my mental faculties and i assure you my psychiatrist has them covered ;P
