Well, after a few minutes of a video, I have this to say.
1) Well, I definitely prefer Minecraft. From the sounds of it Terraria is just a 2D copy. It may have simpler crafting, but some people (like me) don't like everything being easy. It turned a cool exploration game into a platformer. I don't really like that.
2) While Terraria may have more elements, Minecraft has many more possibilities. Incredibly large maps, amazing complexity, etc. So, Minecraft definitely wins for me.
At first glance, terraria looks like an immediate clone of minecraft, and a bad one at that, due to the 2D thing. But they focus on two different aspects - Terraria can't really do Art, the 2D things would block the way of a lot of people, and there aren't too many colors to work with - but while Minecraft does have Survival, the main focus has always been the building. Because of its 3D nature, immense amount of colors, and originality, Minecraft is the better game. Terraria's still good though, just not as good as Minecraft, whose developer, mind you, had beaten out Nintendo, Epic, Valve and BioWare back in March Mayhem on The Escapist.
Ive played both on my brothers acount (shh!) and i prefer minecraft because it has better building capabilities and im not into constant monster attacks before u even build a base (blood moon+no base=death) but i wish minecraft let you transfer your inventory like terraria does because then you could still have a goal to work towards when your favorite server is down. no they are not clones.
but i wish minecraft let you transfer your inventory like terraria does
Well I suppose you could always use an inventory modder to replace your inventory if you want, though granted most people might be tempted to use this to cheat.
Both are good in their own way( focusing on different things, minecraft=building, terraria=combat),but Minecraft still is not technically finished and has a ton of potential to work with. I pick Minecraft.
Oh, and Minecraft will probably borrow a bit from Terraria since Notch has tweeted about how much he likes playing it.
The only thing I can think of that would fit well into Minecraft from Terraria are things like Meteors and new tiers of weapons. I still think Terraria is pretty much a re-focused 2D version of Minecraft, but a good game is a good game.

I know there are some servers where you can spawn items but it doesnt seem the same because you didnt actually work for them. its kinda like how the when normal people cant spawn items the person who runs the server will let you trade for them but even then if you have a perfectly good diamond pickaxe on one server it can b kinda time consuming to get another on a different server
