This one is, in my opinion, nearly impossible. Metal, you said it yourself, is a very broad genre, with dozens of distinct subgenres. The U.S.A. has Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slipknot and the like, while Europe has Blind Guardian, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Gamma Ray, Samael, and the like. There are too many variables. I think Europe has many very good bands, but America has a few awesome bands. I believe Europe has enough very good bands to win over America, so I'd have to say Europe wins.

Metal with clean vocals: Europe, they've got the best Power Metal around. But metal with growling: not so sure. The two areas varry greatly. The U.S. focuses more on technical death metal, with bands like Nile, new JFAC (meaning after the Doom EP), The Facless, and Daath. While Europe focuses more on blackened death metal and black metal, bands like Behemoth, Vader, Belphegor, and Immortal. But Europe also has tech death bands, as well. They've got Obscura and Opeth. But America made the entire death metal genre with the band Death (that's where the name of the genre comes from, because Death was the first of it's kind). And America's old school death metal is unmatched. But Europe has hardly any bad death metal bands.

So, that being said, I guess I'm undecided.

the Euopeans have a lot more good metal bands than we do (i say we cuz im from the US). the US has so metal bands that think they are metal but are no where near any form of true metal. for example: Slipknot, Korn, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc. whereas the Euro's have such outstanding acts like Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Heavenly, Judas Priest, Venom, Stratovarious, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Bling Quardian, Primal Fear, Def Leppard, Motorhead, Saxon, Diamond Head, and many more. but we have some really great bands like Dio, Megadeth, Slayer, and others, just not nearly as many as the Europeans do (slightly jealous)

More than half of the countries have metal bands and the broad spectrum of styles makes hard to think about a geographical location metal master.

United States have most of the good Thrash Metal(Bay Area) and Death Metal(Florida) bands. Norway with the return to paganism phylosophy (thanks to the particular way Catholicism was imposed) brought Black Metal, Germany is proud for Power Metal as well (maybe something related to their Romanticism). Gothenburg was Melodic Death Metal epicenter (even if that is not exactly related to the next wave of Melodeath bands, the ones that sounds like Power Metal with harsh vocals) and United Kingdom is the reason behind the popularity of the, in that time, young Heavy Metal or Traditional.

as FINLAND has many a great metal band. They have Sonata Arctica, Statovarius, and Nightwish just to name a few.

This is a great question... Europe has so many GREAT bands, but American bands are so unique with what they do.

Europe invented metal, (Black Sabbath) but USA perfected it (metallica)... As far as the cultures, I think that Europe has more and crazier fans than USA. so Europe gets that edge.

I think I'm going to have to go with USA. I really like the uniqueness of all of the popular USA bands. This may also be biased cause I'm from the USA.

That wasn't terrible. Let's see you play drums like that. And their piano player is very skilled, listen to Oracles, Mafia, or the beginning to Embodied Deception. Drummer's a whole lot faster and can still keep a beat than any of the bands you named.
