One of the things that i've grown to love is the slew of people telling other AG users they are spamming because they only rate games. Who really cares? thats my opinion its a freakin game site, if your taking it that serious well, your probably 13 or the ****ing 40 year old virgin.
Rating a game is worth 2 AP, so maybe the people that get worked up on game raters are really getting worked up at people gaining AP without posting or commenting.
I guess the only problem with rating a lot of games is if people who do it rate the games before giving them a chance. You usually need to play a game for a while before you can tell which rating it really deserves, and when people see someone with thousands of rated games they tend to assume he didn't play each of them for more than a minute, if at all.
From what I can see, you're the only one getting worked up about it, since you created this thread.
About your post, it's because they care about points. If they get worked up about people spam rating, they care. But spam is spam, it's frowned upon, and you can get in trouble for it, so it's okay for people to care. It's just like saying, why care if people spam the forums? Well, it's annoying. Would you like it if people didn't care if others spammed the forums? If you do, then it'd be horrible to be here since nobody would care about spam. If you've been here for a few months, it's unlikely you played all those games for more than five-ten minutes.
Didn't work at first, but I refreshed it and it worked. And I'm also using Google chrome.
Back on topic, I do find it a problem. Spamming doesn't really give feedback to the programmer. All those "Good game" and "Bad game" doesn't really give the programmer a hint on how to improve. Let's say you spent five years on a painting and all you get as feed-back is "It's pwety". Can't really improve, eh? When spamming in Forums it generally makes the Forum less fun for the rest of the users. Can't really have an interesting discussions with only 7 worded responses. Now I do frown upon spamming, but it shouldn't be taken to. What I mean is pausing the whole discussion to tell the dip-**** to stop repeatedly writing 7 worded responses on threads then telling the same thing again on his profile instead of letting the mods deal with it. It's there jobs after all.
Another thing is this... Rate spamming means that you're not actually giving the game a thorough look over. You're just giving it some random rating, and not rating it based off of what you would truly think it would be. The only reason people would have +1000 games rated over the course of a few days would be so that they can climb the AG rank ladder. I'm not worred about rank, but I do somewhat care about people giving games false ratings. If a game has like a 5 out of 10, then I probably won't give it a shot. If dozens of people who were rate spamming all gave an other wise 10 out of 10 game 5s then a really well thought out and developed game and developer won't get as much of the spot light as they should've.
Spammers in the forums are also kinda agitating. If you have an opinion on a lot of threads and you give your opinion on a lot of threads in a short amount of time then that isn't really spam.
Now I do frown upon spamming, but it shouldn't be taken to.
How did the seriously at the end get cut of?
Anyhoo, I think the whole spam problem in the video game comments is linked to the sites popularity. There are "one million" users here and none of them probably know about the "7 words=spam" policy we have here. So instead of posting game reviews they just post these simple 7 worded comments.
And so this question comes to mind. If this forum was more popular among the *cough* "one million" users here, what would it be like? Would it be better than it is now? Would it be like game comments v.2? Or would it be even worse: a forum infested with spam on every thread in every sub-forum?
I understand the frustrations if someone does it to the extremes, for instance creating their account one day and 1000 games rated on day two, but some people might just rate the games after the play them rather than want to get involved in the community or leave feedback.
I'm worried about people's intentions when it comes to rating 1000 games in the space of a few days. Also as Sonata earlier mentioned, rating for the sake of AP suggests that games aren't really being given well-thought ratings. That's an issue.
