There have been a few games that have up and disappeared over the years. That may or may not have contributed to the phenomena you've seen. If nobody had noticed them gone, then they probably weren't very good.

Since everyone seems to take notice of his counter, I think he should make his counter read 9001 games rated. That way everyone would be like "ZOMG!!! IT'S OVER 9000!!!"

I saw in Cormyn's profile that he rated 2339 games O.O but the total is 2155 OMG!!
hmm no that's not right. Chances are that the "All Games" list is not listing every game that is on the website, because I have rated more games then that as well.
