Should there be free trade between all nations? Only between certain nations with tariffs on others? Worldwide tariffs? What do you think and why?

I think that free trade could be good, but not between all nations. The purpose of a tariff is so a domestic product theoretically is cheaper than a foreign product. That protects merchants from one country from competing with merchants from another country who could just lower the price b/c they use cheap labor (China). However, in this day and age, I think that the tariff is pretty much useless, except for certain merchandise. But I think that individual nations should forge Free Trade Treaties by themselves between other nations, rather then it being forced upon them.

Should there be a special tax on imported cars so people buy cars made in America?

Some nations literally require the income from import tariffs to continue functioning, in other nations it's purely a matter of politics. In most nations it's a mixture of the two.

"Should there be free trade or not?" is such a massively open-ended question that it could be be debated practically endlessly.

Should there be a special tax on imported cars so people buy cars made in America?

Special, as in a whole different tax on imports just for foreign cars, independent from all other tariffs?

I could go both ways, depending on how I look at it.

The first is this: have an additional import tax on foreign cars, because Americans are more likely to buy foreign cars than American made cars. This way, the U.S. can make more money on those companies, because those companies know they will make lots of money selling their cars in America. ANSWER: YES

People should have their own choice in choosing whether they want to buy American made cars, or foreign cars - they don't need the government to tell them which one they should buy. Yes, it may be better for the U.S. if people buy American made cars.

Now that I think about it, I am starting to disagree with the second choice. The government really isn't forcing anyone to buy American made cars with the extra tax (I am assuming it is a tariff). They are just giving an incentive to.

However, if this special tax is not a tariff, but a tax directly towards the buyer, then I would say NO, there should not be a special tax. Like the second argument, people can choose what car they want - they shouldn't have to pay more taxes on foreign cars so they buy American made cars.

Hopefully that all made sense.

Foreign cars versus American cars

In 2005 there were 63 million cars and light trucks produced worldwide. The USA produced 11,524,000, Japan produced 10,064,000, Germany produced 5,543,000, followed by China. Would you be surprised to know that many of the vehicles manufactured in the USA are designated as âforeignâ while many vehicles manufactured in Mexico or Canada are designated as âdomesticâ (American)? Thatâs due to federal regulations that require a âdomesticâ vehicle to be made of at least 75% domestic parts (content). So, US manufacturers send parts to Mexico or Canada where the cars are built, but are legally sold as âdomesticâ. Toyota, Honda, Nissan, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Hyundai manufacture cars in the USA, with American workers, in American plants, with American research facilities, that are âforeignâ because they contain less than 75% domestic parts (content). The picture gets even murkier if we take a closer look at the major manufacturers. They are multi-national corporations with operations and manufacturing arms and partners world-wide. General Motors owns or has a percentage stake in Saab, Opel, Holden, Fuji Heavy Industries (Daewoo), Suzuki Motors, and Isuzu Motors. In 1998 Daimler-Benz A.G. of Germany, took control of Chrysler to become DaimlerChrysler A.G. Ford owns Volvo, Land Rover, Aston Martin and Jaguar, and has a significant stake in Mazda. Letâs see, BMW owns the Mini and Rolls Royce; Volkswagen owns Bentley⦠Ok, not withstanding âautomotive nepotismâ, for the purpose of this article, foreign means the vehicle has a foreign name-plate and American means the vehicle has an American name-plate!

And the link (

That quote should hopefully change the views of cars.

American made cars are technically sold as foreign cars, even though they were made by Americans in America.

The crappy cars you must be talking about are the ones made in Mexico and Canada, but make with American parts (so they are technically sold as American made cars).

I wasn't trying to shove it off to other countries. In addition, that would have been the first time for me - although I realize you are talking about Americans in general.

I agree that our car manufacturers aren't that great, however I was only trying to clarify some things in my last post.
