i dont believe in the bible. Why do i not believe that the universe was created in 6 days, about 6-10,000 years ago, by an all powerful super being who blew into dust to make DNA, and put two people into a magic garden with a talking snake. hmm why do i dowbt a book with a talking donkey, magic hair that gives someone super strength, a jewish zombie loop hole, etc. but enough of why i dont believe, i am here to ask why you do. (even better why you dont)
There are two threads involving religion on the first page, both of them among like, the top 6. Anyway, I feel the book has been corrupted over the years.
I'm guessing most of you above have never read the bible properly, especially keeton52,whose comment is based on little if any facts from the bible. It is true that the Old Testament is a little far fetched, but most of it is representative ie. the talking snake warns of temptation from the Devil and the story of Samson, the man with the "magic hair that gives someone super strength" as molybdenum42 so eloquently put it warns of pride and lust. As to the Creationist theory that sounds ludicrous, it may be a simple translation error as the Hebrew word for day is the same as era, so the world may have been created over six eras and that ties in with the scientific version of events quite nicely. The New Testament is mainly the Christian teachings shown through Jesus's life so does not matter if it is factually inaccurate. The "jewish zombie loophole" is a portrayal of the Christian belief in life after death. You dont have to accept the Bible as historical fact to appreciate its teachings.

This works for some things, but definitely not for everything. Things like 'don't kill' or the magic hair story you mentioned are nice, but when jesus orders that the unbelievers shall be slaughtered before him, I wonder how you could appreciate the entire bible.
I'm gonna stop reading here given how you assme the things in the Bible is true. Prove it - that's all I ask.
At the same time, you go ahead and set about proving that it's not true and we'll see how far the two of you get.
Bear in mind I'm an atheist.
My primary argument against the literal truth of the Bible stems from the thousands of years of virtually unrecorded human history before the Bible was written and the hundreds of advanced societies we know existed on the planet at the same time as the events recorded in the Bible. If there is a God and he created all of earth and humanity why do all of the events that occur in the Bible stem from the same tiny area of the planet and involve such a limited number of societies? Moses wandered in sandals in the wilderness while the Shang/Yin dynasty furthered an amazingly advanced civilization with it's own religion completely unrelated to the one God of the Bible. Was that massive society and it's "false idols" not of interest to God? Does he only care about Jews? And if so, why did he even let other religions grow?
As for later occurances, oddly enough the bible doesn't speak much of Rome. You'd think there'd be an awful lot of smiting to be done when it comes to that particular society, especially given their influence over Egypt and Palestine at the time Christ was alive, not to mention the fact that many Biblical Kings were either tools or puppets of Rome.
Note that I'm speaking of the Bible specifically, the seemingly similar basis in origin of so many major religions worldwide is another topic entirely.
I'm guessing most of you above have never read the bible properly,
Yeah I forgot to flip it upside down squint my eyes while hopping on one foot.

I can't find anything supporting this. The word in Hebrew used for day was yovm (×××), which as far as I can tell only means day. Era appears to be tkufa (תק×פ×") in Hebrew.
However even if this is true, unless a Hebrew era means millions of years, it's still way off.

So basically the whole **** thing's a metaphor now?
At the same time, you go ahead and set about proving that it's not true and we'll see how far the two of you get. Bear in mind I'm an atheist.
... I can't disprove a something that hasn't been proven.
Shifting the burden of proof.
Which, no offense Shopworn Soul - is stupid considering it's impossible for me to do when there isn't proof suggesting the Bible is
true.
And stuff in the Bible has been proven false.
The Earth is 6,000 years old. Prime example.
Also, when did Highfire claim it was false? He is just asking for proof.
I've been around this loop more than a few times and I can almost positively say the Bible is false - I've also waged the argument that God is an *** if he were real and have actually had some success in that criteria if I remember correctly.
That's extrapolated from looking at the lineages going back to Adam. I think the Earth and plants existing before the Sun or there being a firmament over the Earth are better examples.
