I was expecting ChillzMaster to be the Original Poster of this thread... I'm surprised. :P
Good ol' days. Definitely. Sadly since gaming has become so much more open - as has the internet, so has the oppurtunity of being anonymous. The greater amount of people have severely ruined the style of gaming, and the spirit behind it.
The main / only game I know which has maintained its old traditions is Starcraft II, the professional play is outstanding and it sticks with the idea that gamerscore / time spent playing etc doesn't matter. I have nearly 1.5k Acheivement points on the game, and I can safely say I don't care if you have 3.5k - all that tells me is that you've taken the time to do the Campaign on Brutal Difficulty, doing all the challenges along the way.
Herpa-derp, I still have an equal chance of winning in a 1v1
Big example but sadly I know of no other games like that :< Although I hear Athene and Swifty are playing WoW again, trying to get it back to its oldschool style. WoW is a good game but I've not the time trying to make sure everything is optimized etc - ironically an RTS is easier for things like that, but an RPG with WoW, with 50 abilities that you use (exaggerated I know) and keybindings for all / most of them is painful to get used to - I just want to play casually but I do stand for making it a difficult game.
I was second on the scoreboard in a game when I had no idea how to play Hunters - just did the talents, had some Level 70 PvP gear and got into a BG. That SHOULDN'T happen.
I know I'm rambling - but yeah, good old days of gaming... I miss it :<
I find indie games with small communities usually are friendly. In Darkspace, pretty much everyone is friendly to each other and know each other, even if they're in different factions. Occasionally you get some rage...but not much. Also there is time to have fun and do silly stuff, like doing all destroyers vs dreadnaughts+stations.
It seemed like indie games are doing it right, now a days devs are pointing to a younger audience with being rewarded for doing the most simplest tasks, CoD was the first of this. I mean you get a fancy "One Shot one Kill" when you kill someone with a sniper, the maps there are fairly simple as well.
Basically less simple more fun.
If I can I'll find the video where I got this from.
I don't see that at all nowadays. Sure, I'm obsessed with Gamerscore, but Your Friendly Neighborhood Satanist doesn't discriminate on how good or experienced a player one is based on a set of numbers alone. He needs to face you in Halo, Brawl, and Civilization 4 first. B^)
Kids aren't like that y'know, they generally don't care about stuff like that at the age they'd be gullible enough to believe it.
Infact - that sounds more like the playerbase than the adverts.
It's how gaming has developed - to become more open to players. It's really kinda that simple, previously, it could be hard and the people who did it HAD the achievements. Now you have a badge for completing the campaign on any difficulty saying it's an achievement.
Achievements are an expansion on the game. Look at saints row if you complete the main story you have like 20 achievements. If you want more you do activities. Achievements can be replaced by trophies
