OMG I completely agree! I mean sometimes it works like in the bar scene in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (where the fat guy points a pistol at Indy, a gunshot is heard, fat guy falls dead with Marion holding a pistol behind him), or when it's used purely for humor like the holy hand grenade in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", but other times it just fails due to overuse (like how it's in every episode of Yu-Gi-Oh).
Or the eagles in the LOTR movie. they showed up Every time something needed to be done, like to save Gandalf from Isengard, or to give Frodo and Sam a lift. But the idea of the cave ghosts helping to win the battle of Gondor was okay, at least it had some lead up to it.
Whether a cliche is annoying entirely depends on how it is pictured. Some directors are able to take something overused and twist it in a wonderful new way, or at least to a point where it is not particularly annoying. Whether they are successful is however up to the audience, and some are tougher than others.
I shake my head in disapproval whenever the protagonist and his significant other kiss near the end of the movie. That's been done way too many times. It's time to get a little more creative.
It also annoys me when guys in movies don't say make a sound when they get enormous battle wounds, but scream out in agony when their wounds get cleaned by female characters.

Well... when the adrenaline isn't pumping anymore, you feel more pain. That one is totally within the realm of possibility... not so much the surviving some of these giant wounds tho... I've heard stories of people being shot in the heat of the moment and later on going "Oh... I've been shot" ...so who knows
Yes, they are. I hate how girls that are popular always act like they have control and can do whatever they want to. Cliches suck. They're normally a bunch of girls, acting all snobby and bratty and....... I HATE IT!!!!
The use of sound in space in movies is one of the few cliches I'm completely ok with. It would be quite boring without sound effects. The only movie that followed the rules and succeeded was 2001: A Space Odyssey, mostly because it didn't really have action sequences.
