I heard from CNN that women in Saudi Arabia can vote now. What do you think about this? Will they get more rights? How will this affect other things? Women's Right's? Just post stuff.

Hopefully this link will work.

I just read this comment. Might be interesting to hear your thoughts about it:

They got the right to vote in meaningless elections, to elect people into powerless positions. And, of course, they still need their husbands' permissions to go out of their houses in the first place to cast their votes, and they still can't drive their own cars to the polling station. And don't forget about the mandatory male relative escorts.

I think that the Saudi government is a little scared because of the Arab Spring and now they have to do something to calm the people.

Oh... it's a false sense of power. Like in america, how blacks could vote if they passed tests? I get it. Well this sucks. My thread is pointless.

It'll be a long time, probably well out of our lifetimes, before anything actually happens that's worth speaking of. Men don't want to change anything, and women are too scared to.

I think it would take a lot of New Years Evenings until it will happen since Saudi Arab. Is a Islamic country and the Koran said that men and woman aren't equal (no offense).

Ah yes the good old literacy tests and voting tax. HOWEVER, then came the grandfather clause and then came freedom.

Could happen. It's a start at least.

law will grant people rights, but there will always be discrimination. I think the better question is, how will we be able to beat back discrimination, if we have stereotypes, and premade opinions? these are the things that truly prevent laws from changing.

Religion seems to have a lot to do with the discrimination.

From the article link:
"There are no specific traffic laws that make it illegal for women to drive in Saudi Arabia. However, religious edicts are often interpreted as a prohibition of female drivers. Such edicts also prevent women from opening bank accounts, obtaining passports or even going to school without the presence of a male guardian."

They seriously need seperation of church and state.

Diffinitly. If I was a women who went there. Would I need to follow those laws. I'm pretty sure the answer is yes but I wanted to clarify.

well.... (this is only my guess from what i know so dont take it too seriously). technically you wouldnt have to follow this, but it would be pretty dangerous to do that. in order to stay safe you need everybody to be ok with you but it only takes one person to hurt you (or worse). and many people there get annoyed by seeing a woman who is dressed unproperly (unproperly in their opinion). so id be really careful and stay low.

No, but if you choose not to, you might want to consider an armed escort.

if you were a woman, I'm sure eventually, somebody will obtain enough gall to change the law. then, you can live a little more easily.

Oh one of the laws is that women need to be completely clothed. You don't need the burka dress (it's just traditional), but you can't show much skin or they'll throw you in jail.

well.... "not show much skin" is subjective. and id say youd be lucky if you were thrown to jail. it would be very dangerous if you wouldnt follow the laws as strictly as posibble.
