Hey, for someone who stopped giving a bleep about most popular music back in 2000 or so (except for Weird Al Yankovic), video game background music and soundtracks have stopped me from becoming a musical orphan.
Heck, I was just rocking out to Driver's You Are the Wheelman about an hour ago.
the music puts more distance btwn you and the game.
Music in games is meant to draw you further into the game. It may not work for everyone, but it does work for most people. It should also be noted that thats just for the campaign, multiplayer doesn't really need the music.
Like most people have said, it creates a mood, like suspense.
I really like listening to music when I play a game anyways. The same sound effects would get annoying to me after awhile without some music backing it up.
It gives more emphasis to what the scene in the game is about. 4 example your in some sorta love scene, so some lovey dovey music comes out for you to understand even more.
It depends the type of game, but mostly aas already said it is used for emotions, also it is to help build up tension into the game, like a certain programme of film, turn the sound of and it's rather boring, but turn the sound on again and it becomes much better. Sometimes it helps you understand the meaning of the game. The reason most people turn the sound off is eather because of the mood they are in or they just do not like the music but they think of other excuses with out thinking literally. Also the music can help you to know what is going on,e.g so when playing the sims 3 when you are going to get burgled a perticular tune plays, as the same when some one has died or is giving birth(On the game)
This is why there is music in most games hope you under stand all this and you don't think I am one of those weird brainy know it alls cuz i don't want to be...
Because the music creates the atmosphere. It's like watching a movie. Try to imagine a movie without sound. I can tell you, it's very boring.. The music creates the feelings..
