I'm pretty sure a lot of people one way or another heard about the remarks made by Susan Sarandon. Do you think that the ABL is correct in saying that she owes the Catholic community an apology. Also what are your beliefs on Pope Benedict being apart of the Hitler Youth Program. Please don't spam.

I don't know how old he was when he was with them

He was 14 at the time, but it was a requirement for most teens (other those with mental/physical disorders) during WWII.

What a lot of people don't realize is that the Hitler Youth program was essentially the same as The Boy Scouts of America, there was even a womens group similar to the Girl Scouts.

The main differences between the two was that, as someone mentioned, for many children attendance was compulsory.

Another thing people should know is that at a certain point, the activities progressed from camping/hiking/wallet making or whatever to squad based, small unit, military tactics, and many chapters of the Hitler Youth were mobilized to fight on both the Eastern and Western Fronts. Some were even put in tank groups.

As for the Pope being a Nazi, I think I have to bring up what I say when people call all the German soldiers Nazis at the time. Saying all average German people or soldiers or children were Nazis, is like saying American citizens and GI's were all Democrats, because FDR was a part of the Democratic Party. Germany was under the control of the National Socialist, or Nazi Party. Many Germans, were Nazis, but the rest of them held other political affiliations, whether overtly or covertly. And sometimes keeping your affiliation covert could save your life.

To say the Pope was a Nazi at the time would mean that he had actually became a member of the Nazi Party, which usually requires an age limit and and a registration, similar to today. Also, even if he was sympathetic to Naziism at the time, which there isn't really any proof of, who really listens to a 14 year old's political affiliation and opinions. It's kind of like kids who wear Che Guevera T-Shirts today in my opinion.

they were at first, then when a huge chunk of germany's children were in the HJ, he changed the organization just enough to train them to be little nazis.

lol, that may be so but the stereotype is more prominent.

as long as the pope didn't do whatever the nazi party told him to do with a smile on his face, then I'm sure he's not a nazi.

I don't think any of those teenagers you are talking about actually know what he did in the first place. the rest I'm pretty sure know that he helped castro rise to power.

I think quakingphear summed up my views, we don't really understand the extent of something when we're fourteen so our views really can't be taken into account, I mean I was fourteen three years ago and completely different from who I am now, and the same while hold true in another three years. Beyond that though, being forced to, or willingly participating on the German side wouldn't make you a Nazi, to be a Nazi one would have to share the ideals and goals of the Nazi party and act to bring those goals to fruition. Something the pope would've been incapable of at age fourteen.

You don't need to have the ability to implement political change to be considered ideological. That said, I doubt he was a hardliner, even if he was from the Nazi heartland of Bavaria.

What I'm disappointed about with this whole scandal is that instead of bringing out the murky history of the Catholic Church's relations with the Nazi party and their subsequent sheltering of Nazis after the war, it's just used as a personal attack on the Pope, and a groundless one at that.

I very much doubt that the Pope would be a Nazi. He's classed as the closest person to God in the eyes of chirstian's. So if the Pope was a Nazi somebody would have found out and he wouldn't be the Pope, put it that way.

I think if I was a Catholic I would be very embarrassed that the leader of my Church said those things and that he was in the Hitler youth programme.

As an atheist I think it was very hypocritical for the Pope to blame Atheism for Hitler and he joining the Hitler youth programme.

But he shouldn't be considered a Nazi just a very extreme Catholic but he has to be as he is the Pope.

Ha good one MageGrayWolf but in all seriousness I think the Pope needs to apologise for what he said about atheism because if the Government said things about Christianity, the Pope would rage and people would riot.

the difference between the pope and the goverment is that the goverment has multiple branches of military that can be used to put down a riot. the pope is supposed to be a nice guy so he wouldn't allow the people to riot.

catholics have been insulted before and nobody died from it, why should the goverment calling them out any different?
