When ever we play video games most of the time we dont consider the art of the game. Sometimes an artist will add something hidden or Express him/herself with the game. Are video games art to you?

Are movies art? Is literature art? In my opinion video games are art.

Let's talk a little bit about "Art". First off, we have well... "traditional art", paintings and their kin. They focus on one thing, the visuals, and are most commonly referred to as "Art".

Then we have Literature, simply enough, the skill of language into a story or piece of writing that incites thought and provokes feelings within us.

Then there's Music, a side-bar of Literature, combined with vocal tones and melodies that soothe our ears and make us feel good.

Then there's Graphic Novels, which combines "Traditional Art" with Literature to create a visual story that needs more skill to be adequate than just a "traditional art" piece or a bit of literature alone.

Cinema combines all the above elements, Sound, Visuals, and Story, to create experiences that are enriching and beneficial to the human mind. Again, art.

Now games take all the above and throw their own action into the mix, Gameplay. The interaction of the story and elements of the game that cannot be done by any other medium, its just not possible. If games require more skill and elements to be Great, then why not consider them as Art alongside Literature, Film, Music, and "Traditional Art"?

everything except the coding can easily be called art. personally i think it's a combination of technology and creativity, kind of like cooking in a way..

I beg to differ... Coding can be considered an art since it requires creativity to create a certain effect and that effect influences the whole game, like making the code for having a character fly and be able to see through walls with the press of a button, you don't think about it, but the coding is the only thing thats lets you do that.

i suppose the coding is more of the tool that is used to express the art.

agreed.

I think it is a form of art, as many videogames are meant to tell a story, and represent the essence of the story and the world or scenario where it happens. At that point, the video makers are trying to express something by a 'something' (in this case, the videogame' which we, the gamers, have to interpret in the way we want. It also gives us a sense of pleasure and beauty in its own way, when we find something delighful that no other videogame could do. By those arguments, it's a valuable piece of art.
But the matter would complicate when the video-game is mass-produced as a way of earning money (as with music and other type of art).

I think that coding could be similar to 'making art' than art itself.

They are kind of like all forms of art put together... Not only that, but you get to me a part of the art. That's the fun part.
Yeah; like a brush to a painting, code to a game. That's the way I see it.

Agreed, but it has to be considered as a whole, as cinema is an art that integrates filming, music, etc. Wanna read future comments on this. Nice topic.

not to mention video games are interactive, and they draw in people like no other form of art can achieve.

Definitely! I think that as long it's a way to express yourself it's art. And I've always wanted to help create a videogame, because I've always thought it would help express my feelings.

I'm a little shocked considering this has always been my earnest opinion on video games; art pervades in every aspect of making games.
Literature is art in the way it tells stories.
Movies are art in the way they represent scenarios.
Painting is art in the way it pictures reality with medias.

So why then something combining all of the above couldn't be considered art? Especially when there're games with such concern for aesthetics and complex scenarios out there (i.e.Xenosaga for example, shadow of the colossus, etc).

Video games are not art.
But art can live in video games.
