Okay, so I watch the Spike Video Game Awards every year. First, I'm not sure when it's going to be on this year, and if anybody knows please tell me. Second, the options for GOTY seem to be overwhelming this year.

Here's a list of some of the games that came out this year, and some that will come out this year:

Modern Warfare 3
Little Big Planet 2
Dead Space 2
Marvel Vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds
Crysis 2
Portal 2
Rift
Fable 3
L.A. Noire
Infamous 2
Homefront
Bastion (XBLA)
Dead Island
Mortal Kombat
Resistance 3
Gears of War 3
Driver: San Francisco
Rage
Batman: Arkham City
Battlefield 3
Uncharted 3
Assassin's Creed: Revelations
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Now, I probably missed some, and some probably don't even have a chance, but there's my list.

Anyways, my money is on Assassin's Creed: Revelation, Batman: Arkham City, and Gears of War 3. However, Portal 2 really stands out the most, and I think that Portal 2 should win Game of the Year.

What game (released THIS year) do you think will be the best?

Doubt it would win, but I like Forza 4.
I'm going to get BF3 because I liked the other Battlefields, not sure about it yet. Also, SWTOR is going to be pretty awesome.

Taking popularity into account, it's probably going to be MW3.

Hopefully not, though. I want Skyrim to win. I wouldn't mind if Arkham City won either, although I haven't played that game too much yet.

Spike is full of bull and will devise this so they get the most views not an actually educated approximation of the best game of the year.

Modern Warfare 3 - Possible but it brings nothing new to the table.
Little Big Planet 2 - Possibly but limited to a single system.
Dead Space 2 - Multiplayer was weak, won't win.
Marvel Vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds
Crysis 2 - Quite possible that this will win.
Portal 2 - Again nothing bad about this one.
Rift - Not popular enough to garner a win.
Fable 3 - Weak game from a weak predecessor.
L.A. Noire - Quite possible
Infamous 2 - Single system again but is possible win.
Home-front - Not a strong enough FPS
Bastion (XBLA) - Belongs to the indie category
Dead Island - Over-ally weak game with many problems.
Mortal Kombat - Don't play but unlikely to win from past experience.
Resistance 3 - Single system, not a likely to win.
Gears of War 3 - Single system weak in originality.
Driver: San Francisco - Not enough brought to the table to win.
Rage - Good engine that's about it, not going to win.
Batman: Arkham City - ???
Battlefield 3 - Single player is weak, engine is good and multiplayer is also fantastic. It's a possible win.
Uncharted 3 - Unlikely from impressions also single system.
Assassin's Creed: Revelations - It's possible if they add something good to the game and the multiplayer improves.
Star Wars: The Old Republic - Not likely since we have seen how bioware can easily screw something up (dragon age 2).
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Will likely win since it is skyrim.

In reality it's Skyrim, Assassin's creed, L.A. Noire, Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3, Crysis 2 and Portal 2.

Modern Warefare 3 and Assassin's creed Revelations won't bring something new and amazing to the table.

That leaves L.A. Noire, Battlefield 3, Crysis 2 and Portal 2

L.A. Noire is the only one without multiplayer and requires a taste in detective games. So a smaller interest base.

Battlefield 3 will probably loose because of the single player unless they release something amazing for the multiplayer.

Crysis 2 and Portal 2

Portal 2 just provides more in single player and over-ally a more generative game.

Batman: Arkham City - ???

The sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum. It's story is shorter than the first one, but it does have new gadgets and Catwoman as a playable character. Not to mention side quests, and what seems like infinite Riddler puzzles. The game also has a huge amount of characters (Solomon Grundy, Bane, Catwoman, Clayface, Poison Ivy, Riddler, Joker, Mr. Freeze, just about every single character.)

Modern Warefare 3 and Assassin's creed Revelations won't bring something new and amazing to the table.

Will Call of Duty EVER change? It's just about the same since Modern Warfare. I really hope Assassin's Creed changes after Revelations.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Will likely win since it is skyrim.

It will win because it is itself? I'm more of a fan of Fallout than Elder Scrolls, but I probably will try Skyrim. All of the hype has to be worth something.

New Vegas came out in October, 2010. So, it is not a contestant.

I haven't tried L.A. Noire, but I heard that the facial recognition (or whatever it is called) is way better than any other games' facial recognition.

Trust me, MW3 has an amazing chance of winning actually. Sure, it lacks originally but everyone and their grandmother will be too busy calling each other noobs and shizz to care about any other game.

Portal 2 is just a gem. It's the funniest game I've ever played with a great physics system to compliment its puzzles.

Battlefield 3 has potential if it's just about as hyped as MW3.

Haven't played Arkham City yet.

Why would MW3 win if MW2 and black ops didn't? It's pretty much the same game.

Battlefield 3 looks good, but I'm having a hard time believing that a multiplayer FPS will win.

Skyrim has an insane chance of winning, could be just as revolutionary as fallout 3. Looks like a real solide game.

L.A Noire? I don't really know where this game is heading. I haven't played it yet (I pre-purchased it), and even through it will probably be a really good game, I don't think it's all too revolutionary, and I think Skyrim is a stronger game then L.A.

I also heard about other games like Uncharted or Batman, but I don't really know anything about does games, so I can't really comment on them.

Also, if there is indie GOTY then I hope it will be Bastion or Limbo, and to be honest, the indie gendre was really good this year.

Let's investigate the best games of the years in detail, shall we?

Dead Space 2 was a good horror game, but it just wasn't good enough to compete with titles like Batman and Battlefield 3.

Portal 2 was very good, but the lack of memorable scenes marks a stark contrast from the first game, leaving many of us wanting more.

Mortal Kombat suffers from being a Fighting game, as does MvC3 and the up-and-coming UMvC3, a genre that NEVER wins GOTY. It just doesn't happen.

Bastion is very likely to win Best Indie of the Year, and while its snagging a few Best RPG nominations, it just might get a Best RPG award, but it just can't match the quality of other games to be considered for GOTY.

L.A. Noire has a thing about it, it gets BORING. The game focuses on you doing a job, and just like doing any occupation or job, it will get BORING. On top of that, aside from some pretty awesome face animations, the game really doesn't do much for itself.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Dead Island were excellent games in their own right, but again, they're "Brutal Legend" excellent, a level of excellent just below games like Mass Effect 2 and Bioshock that are considered for GOTY.

Gears of War 3 has garnered much critical acclaim, but a Gears of War game hasn't won a GOTY, ever. It just doesn't happen. I'll go into depth in a little bit.

Batman Arkham City will probably take a few GOTY's home this year, but out of all the GOTY Noms, it will probably have the lowest amount.

Battlefield 3 is a great game, again, and it really isn't going TOO MUCH for Game of the Year, but instead its gunning for taking Best Shooter and Best Multiplayer from Modern Warfare 3. FPS's don't generally win GOTY, the most recent exception of the rule being 2004's Halo 2/Half-Life 2 GOTY tie.

Uncharted 3 is a biggee, as the rival to Arkham City from 2009, it came out of nowhere after everyone was adoring Arkham Asylum and EVERYONE gave it GOTY in 2009. That was Uncharted 2, this time around, metacritic.com has Uncharted 3 at a 94, and Arkham City at a 95. Close, but will it be enough?

Modern Warfare 3... Call of Duty doesn't win GOTY. May it be Resident Evil 4, or Bioshock, or the aforementioned Uncharted 2, the best games in the Call of Duty series are always upstaged by other games. It's just how Games work.

Now, the real battle. The true heavyweight match. 2006 rivals The Legend of Zelda and The Elder Scrolls return with their new games, Skyward Sword and Skyrim. The two games did battle back in 06 with Oblivion and Twilight Princess, and this year's will be quite brutal indeed. However, as the Wii is close to death and has only that once shipped a GOTY game, it is safe to say that for the third time this console generation, Bethesda will take home the gold.

Which brings me to this, the Bethesda and Gears of War rivalry. No matter how good the game is, Gears of War just can't beat a Bethesda game. The first Gears of War was defeated by Oblivion, the second by Fallout 3, and the third will probably be decimated by the Dragons of Skyrim. Again, just the Laws of Physics in Games.

Well, there's my two cents. Skyrim is the probable victor of the most GOTY's, followed in order by Skyward Sword, Uncharted 3, and Arkham City.

Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary will just be a really nice thing for us Halo fanboys to have on our shelves and play for the nostalgia, so yay!

I will name a few more (indie) games that at least will be named by someone.
Minecraft - a very well known game that will have its final release this year.
From Dust - best god game since Black And White 2 , so a big time
Saints Row The Third - it must be nominated at least since it is a very strange game where you can do to much.
Forza 4 - it has been very prized by the UK.

I'm not sure if any of these will win something.

Uhm it came out months ago.

I really hope Bastion wins best Indy game; it deserves it. However Minecraft is out there, and it's going to be some tough competition for Bastion.

As for Uncharted 3, I doubt it will be as amazing as Uncharted 2.

About Best Shooter, I think Gears of War 3 will win. It's a great break from CoD and Battlefield.

Granted Battlefield has only recently made a comeback, and Gears has been around for five years now, I think Battlefield is a great break from Gears.

On top of that, while Gears has fantastic EVERYTHING, it did bore me a bit with the bullet sponge enemies, and the Lambent are just NOT FUN to fight AT ALL. I prefer squishy meatbags, not ticking timebombs.

Battlefield 3 on the other hand... well... just look at my thread.
