On one of my forum posts, someone said that I should "start a thread". Does anyone know what a thread is, or how to start one?

A thread is just another word for a forum topic, and you started one by making this topic.

Usual vocab, go:
Post. This single field of text by me is a post.
Thread. You started a thread by clicking the add topic-button.
Forum. Technically the same as community, sometimes used to mention the sections (Suggestions would thus be a forum).
Forum section. See parenthesis.
Opening post/OP. The first post in a thread. In this case, your post.
Opening poster/OP. The person making the thread, in this case, you.
Lock. Disabling a thread, so no one can post there.
Flagging. Pressing the little red flag to the side of each post, to possible make the admins aware a post is breaking the rules. Not as effective as reporting to a mod, which you do by messaging the mod on their profile.
Necro. A thread is old and has not been active for a long time, but someone decided to post in it regardless. Often especially if the post is spam.

Was that all?

You forgot "Sticky", which are the threads at the top of the page will the little orange pushpins (and which people should take the time to read).

Oh, right.
We need an AG dictionary...
Possibly along with the master of all stickies/the help page being helpful.
