From threats from china and Russia, to nuclear weapons stockpiles by other countries, How much of what we THINK we know is true? Post below what YOU think the media is doing for our country (United states of America) and tell me what YOU think how the media SHOULD be used for!
Face it, whatever we write or present to people will be biased. Personally, I don't think the media feeds us false information (and that people who rant about the media trying to brainwash us or bend us to the government's will are nutcase conspiracy theorists). Yes it is biased (Fox News?), but that's the way it works.
The media doesn't hold pretensions of portraying a fair and objective viewpoint, its writers and news casters have their own opinions which will seep into what they are presenting to the public.
Very true. however one thing that i noticed that ticks me off is that oddly enough there are people that just takes in everything the media throws out and embraces it as trues. many people have a hatred of communism or china/ russia from watching say hollywood movies or books. apparently some people cant distinguish fact from fiction? I hope not...

Not that they can't distinguish fact from fiction, but more like the way the media phrases it. For example, I can present China as a country that is governed simply by an authoritarian government.
Or I can rant about China oppressing its people, stamping out democracy, jailing dissidents and generally imposing its will on people; almost Big-Brother like.
Both mean the same thing, that China isn't a democracy. One just demonises it, whilst the other just states so.
Again that is very true but all the same its still very frustrating that because a country isn't a democracy, which by the way the u.s itself is not, doesn't mean it is an evil, oppressive country... but hey! what can ya do?
But yes I do admit, some people cannot distinguish fact from fiction and constantly spout conspiracy theories. How many times have you seen buffoons talking about the Illuminati or some secret group plotting to take over the world just because they read it in some obscure website?
The united states is really a Federal constitutional republic and yet another thing is forgiveness and understanding of other countries. take Germany for example. for whatever some, not ALL but some people still think of Germany as a bunch of Nazi and racist supremacists... its so ridiculous but that's what they think...
Well yes you can argue that it isn't ''ure democracy''. By and large though, the word "democracy" has come to mean a form of government in which the government derives its power from the people and is accountable to them for the use of that power. In this sense the United States might accurately be called a democracy.
In the strictest sense of the word, the system of government established by the Constitution was never intended to be a "democracy." This is evident not only in the wording of the Pledge of Allegiance but in the Constitution itself which declares that "The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government" (Article IV, Section 4). Moreover, the scheme of representation and the various mechanisms for selecting representatives established by the Constitution were clearly intended to produce a republic, not a democracy.
I'm going to support their decision. A pure democracy of giving every run-of-the-mill schmuck the vote for every single law will run into a quagmire before you can say Let's Vote.
take Germany for example. for whatever some, not ALL but some people still think of Germany as a bunch of Nazi and racist supremacists... its so ridiculous but that's what they think...
Because what makes it to the news is the interesting stuff. A few days ago a Neo-Nazi cell was cracked down by the government and it made headlines. You don't tend to see articles covering the general lives of your typical German.
You'd get used to it. Some people are smart enough and sensible enough to distinguish the two, others aren't. There's no use becoming all worked up over them.
very true, very true indeed..... jeez what has the world gotten itself into? really am wishing for the olden days... none of this current day shmuck...

Well in the old days there was little media for all and everyone remained more or less ignorant about issues outside their own community. Is that better or worse? I'm not going to judge.
So yes just to sum up your initial question. Yes, the media is good if we know to sieve out the obviously biased ones. Some states use the media as tools to tame its people, and some don't.
Im still very young and is just starting to see the world as it really is instead of the way i was brought up to see it so when i see those outrageous and stupid,in all sense of the word, things in the world around me im just flabbergasted...

Haha don't worry, it's good that at least you have enough sense at a young age to see how unfair and blinded the world can be at times. Just don't stress over it.
I hate the media, all of it's corruption such as hacking into mobile phones and what is does to some people's lives. The only media I watch or read is the local newspaper and the news that I hope is more factual than what some media is.
We have media sensations across the globe. What makes you think that it is all bad...? They often publicise things like wars and ****. Why not some of it be good?
Well the rest is such tabloid nonsense to shove the press's opinions in your face whether you like it or not and is just about dumb celebrity gossip, and who gives a **** about that, eh?
[quote]I hate the media, all of it's corruption such as hacking into mobile phones and what is does to some people's lives Well at least not all media powers do that but the ones that do are changing others lives whether for the best or worst... depending on how one sees it.
