Why would it make the site slow? I've seen it on pretty much every forum I've been on and it doesn't seem to slow them down. :/
They had one at the bottom of the Forum Page, but it lagged, and after the population dwindled down, there wasn't really a point. The red button next to your armatar on your wall is supposed to turn green when you're online and red when you're not. Supposed.
They won't have exactly this in AG3, but it'll be similar. When you go onto a person's profile it'll show what they last did under your profile and the button will be green if you are online. Example: GhostOfMatrix was last seen playing Flight five minutes ago. Nichodemus was last seen on the site ten minutes ago. Etc.

I think I had a few occurrences when it actually turned green. Apart from that, I see little point in having such a system. I just leave a comment on a person's wall and wait for them to reply me whenever they pop online.
