You would just need to get lucky and hope someone else is in the area of your character so that you can play with them. With the new update you can play with anyone of any level without them ruining the game for you and killing all of the zombies

There isn't anything you can't do, by yourself, with decent weapons on you. At least I see it that way. Though, I don't play the game anymore.

Dead Island by yourself is an extremely challenging affair. Not impossible, but definitely challenging. It's a very fun game, but I feel as if it takes a wee bit too much from Borderlands. A few friends over teh interwebz and you've got yourself a fun weekend of Zombie Murder.
