Freakenstein, you get a million AP* for mentioning Live a Live.
I have a soft spot for SNES RPGs, for some reason nothing more modern has ever felt quite so epic as the sprawling storylines of games like Chrono Trigger, Tales of Phantasia or Bahamut Lagoon.
And since we've mentioned Bastion, I can't help but reccommend 'The Stanley Parable' - it's a short, free-to-play game made in GMod that uses a similar type of dynamic narration to really play around with its audience's expectations in a lot of fun ways - check it out if get the chance. (You need to have Half-Life 2 to run it, but who doesn't these days?)
Personally, I would have to say any of the Mario Bros. games. They have a great story line. Save Princess Peach. Many other games really have no story line other than complete the level, upgrade, next level, etc, etc, etc... In Mario you finish the game when you save Peach. Plus the game is original and many games nowadays are just spoofs of other games.
Without a doubt, it's Final Fantasy XII for me. Granted, the story line may be too political for most people, it drew me in like a magnet! Top it all off with the amazing battle system where, when you encounter a monster, there is no screen change, the battle just happens right there, and other monsters that stray too close can join in the battle, with the ability to move during battle, the great music and graphics (for a PS2), and the fact that you can use the amazing gambit system where, when set up correctly to eliminate the enemy, you could just sit back and watch your characters wreck havoc on your foes. The only console that I know of that can play FF XII is the PS2, but they might be releasing it on the 360 and PS3, but I doubt it, because it get much buys. But don't let that stop you, just Google it if your interested and if you get really interested in it, sometimes you can find it pretty cheap, if it's Pre-owned, at Gamestop.

well actually if you look at it closely for all FF' they are all very political but FF XII displayed the political side in a very 'raw' manner, especially if you look at FF6 and its whole military story, FF IX and its monarch styled story, they are all political, just other display it better than others.
I've never played FF6. What console(s) is it for and where can you find it? And is it any good???
it was on the PS1 but if you have a PS£ you van get it from PSN and the game is rather phenomenal, the story does get saddening at times and 'ugly', giving it an edge, must play for RPG fans.

you... you can't be serious, can you?
i mean, mario's great and all, but, they're KNOWN for having no storyline other than what you just said. save the princess, and we'll give you no plot or character building devices at any point on your way to saving her. and it's an age old thing, too, save the princess from the horrible monster.
and no, there's tons of games with storylines, not just 'finish the level and upgrade' or whatever you said. free games maybe, but...
anyway... i've also gotta mention silent hill 2, okami, and call of cthulhu. all good ones.

phew finally someone thought that was stupid as well, i though i was the only one
Okay the best story line is Red Dead Redemption story line made by Rockstar Games. Nothing can beat it. It takes a while but it is a story about a man growing up in the Western times and has to get his family back by killing outlaws. But in the end he is betrayed by the police and there is an epic shootout at the end very sad ending too. Lots of emotion.
Well, Final Fantasy VIII for me. The whole time-travel thing, where you discover what will happen and why the world is attacked, the different people and how they changed, how you discovered just about everything in the plot... Along with the constant twists in the story. It's like you think every little piece is a random story, but everything starts to fit together... It still blows my mind.
kingdom hearts: the main story is amazing. espacially when you complete the side games and understand that it just gets even deeper. and then there are the stories of each world (espacially in the first game) that drew me in too.
pokemon mystery dungeon: im in love with this series. i wasnt expecting a story line at all. when i got this... i was shocked. this story made me feel happy, sad, surprised, mad and what not. this game is just amazing in my opinion.
final fantasy 6: i think the main story isnt too amazing but if you focus on every story that every character has then you will notice that some of them are really great.
final fantasy 7: kind of obvious for me. one of my fav characters and one of my most hated characters. i dont think the word spoilers goes with this game anymore but i wont say too much. i do like the way this game can actually represent our world.
final fantasy 9: this one felt like a fairy tale for me and really made me happy and feel like a child again.
final fantasy 10: this story was just incredible in my opinion. they really put an affort to create a whole world with its own logic.
golden sun: idk. maybe the story isnt too great. i still liked that game and the story was pretty complicated.
sonic 2 battle: i never thought a sonic game would have a great story. well i guess it wasnt great but the story drew me in.
mother: this game is just weird... and you pretty much only get 10% of the story through the whole game and 90% of it DURING the last fight. it didnt feel too deep but the more i thought about the game AFTER i beat it the more i connected to the story. i really like the fact that pretty much every different person has a different theory on the actual story of that game.
wow this was long XP i guess there are more that i cant remember right now
