So today I was trying to trade in an unopened game I got for Christmas. Thing was, when I tried to trade it in at gamestop I was told it was against company policy for them to buy unopened games because quote "it could be stolen." The clerk told me I should just leave the store open my unused game and then come back to sell. He said, "I'll pretend I didn't see anything." I got scared because I thought he was going to call the police so I ran out tore the case and then came back in to sell it. I left scared that he might call the police on me. When I got home my parents told me that I was just ripped off because of the incedent.
It REALLY seems like you just got ripped off right there, the reason why I say that is because if you tried to return that game instead of trading it you could've got the full price back for that game and you would get more money. But since you opened the protective wrapping you couldn't get full price because it immedietly becomes used once you do. But if ever they say that to you please relize that that is impossible because everytime you buy a game they scan the barcode to show that it's been sold so there is no way at all that you could've been arrested unless the guy slipped something into your hand.

Okay so far...
Thing was, when I tried to trade it in at gamestop I was told it was against company policy for them to buy unopened games because quote "it could be stolen."
Could you expand on this?
The clerk told me I should just leave the store open my unused game and then come back to sell. He said, "I'll pretend I didn't see anything."
That doesn't sound like it was a good idea.
I got scared because I thought he was going to call the police
1) Why would you be scared if he called the police? You didn't steal it.
2) I highly doubt he would call the police anyways.
What do you think?
How much was it worth, and how much did he pay you for it?
You could always have just sold it on eBay, or to a more willing shop. There's nothing to be worried about; on what evidence will the police even have to arrest you? Zilch.
You've got ripped-off pretty badly there, I trade my unopened games all the time and no one ever tells me anything.
Now, if there actually is a policy that says so, they still have no evidence to prove that you've stolen the game. At most times, scanning the bar code will prove whether the game has been bought or stolen. Next time, tell them to show you the policy they claim to have
I work for a shop similar to game stop and sadly it is company policy. The correct thing to do in situations like that is to ask for the original or gift receipt of the product.
Also: the police aren't called if you try trade in one unopened game. If you come in every week with an unopened game or like 20 at the one time, then there's a chance they will be notified.
Now, if there actually is a policy that says so, they still have no evidence to prove that you've stolen the game
All game-stops and my store, and game etc do actually have the policy and *should* have physical proof of it in store in the form of a memo booklet.
