Brickbeard got it.. makes perfect sense. I think most people would think that "nearing the center of a field" would mean that he was on the ground moving toward the center and not actually coming from the air nearing the center by way of jumping out of a plane. He therefore knew he was going to die because if you jump out of a plane and your parachute don't open, you be screwed.
