Perhaps the Mods would be so kind as to draw up a list of words that are automatically censored when used. Not just swear words but also words that when used in the correct context could be vulgar.
I say this for this reason:

I had this comment censored, "Oh yeah, about that...
I meant a bull OR a pig. I don't really know what it is. It looks like a bull, you know, a man cow, uh, he-cow? but if you **** your head slightly to the right, it looks like a pig with uncommonly long teeth."
I leave you to consider what the unhappy word was.
Words like that should be on the Forbidden List.

Now, what do you all think? Should there be a list or no-no words, or not?

It's another word for rooster.

You'd have to put it somewhere besides the forums. If you make a list of all the censored words, they'd all be censored once you post them. The only way to un-censor them would be to mess with BBCode, it would ruin the entire point of censoring them in the first place.

Every censored word with a double meaning has synonyms. If you want to use a word like rooster as a verb, you can use "tilt" or some other word with the same meaning.

A list of these words would just remind people of the words they aren't supposed to use, which means they're more likely to use them.

Uhhhhh... it seems as if you've missed the point.
Didn't you see the four astericks? That's the
censored word. Uhhgg...Why did I post this?

He didn't miss the point and I see what he is trying to say. If they do make a list people will just use them more because they are not supposed too. Ernie is also saying that if you put the list in the forums all you would see is **** a bunch of times for every word. They block the words automatically that could be used as vulgar.

No, I get the point. Your idea is to have a list of all the censored words so people will know which words not to say. I don't think it's that big of a problem, though. Most of the time people are going to figure out what the censored is by the context it's used in. There are few censored words that have a non-vulgar meaning, so unless you really feel the need to use that particular word, you can choose another word with the same meaning to replace it.

The problem is the censored word is a slang term for male genetalia.

But what would parents think, if they found out a website was providing a list full of derrogatory words? A kid, being full of innocence, might stumble upon it and discover a bunch of words he didn't formerly know. This could potentially open AG up to an otherwise avoidable lawsuit.

Yes, I see. You make a good point, Maverick, but I was censored out
of context. I'm sure you realize that. I think I created this post
for no reason.

Well, we're kind of stuck now. It is a good idea to have such a list but the whole part about the younger user running into it would get parent on a "not so friendly line" with AG. SOOO, I think it would be best just to try to avoid using words that sound vulgar in the first place.

Kind of hypocritical to slam a website when the kids have almost certainly gone through life hearing at least a couple of swears by the time they find AG. Society is not an insulated bubble.

I don't really see the need for censoring words at all really. I even get a little confused sometimes because when I try to figure out the context and shifting through the bad words I know so I can find the right one. This is a 13 and older site. As long as that is made clear to the users, I don't see a reason to censor the words.

You know why stuff like that is censored? Because
1. it was a decision made by Dan. Considering people will make threads complaining about ads that are a little risky, but in no way violating the rules or the pg13 rating, what wouldn't happen if various swear words went uncensored? This, at least, is something that can be controlled, and if you can't function without saying those words, well, that's too bad.
2. People have actually been using a fair deal of those words to threat the female moderators here, which is why "forced sex without consent" is censored.
3. Many of the censored words are actually there to limit spam.

I don't agree with all of the words censored, for one, "forced sex without consent" is useful in debates and pretty much no where else these days, but otherwise I do agree with their decision to have censored words.
And, well, I would rather see a flamer go ******* ******** ***** *** or something to that extend instead of seeing it spelled out. Not to mention when people do circumvent the censors, they are consciously making an effort to break the rules so the mods don't have to warn them, but can go right to the removing of harmful individuals.

But that's just me.
