It's hats. hats, that are related one way or another to the place in the hierarchy the ranking comes from (though perhaps a bit assumed?). Like a hood for a serf, or perhaps the helmet of a farmer foot soldier, the "Robin Hood" like hat of a squire, at least to common fiction. It is really just that. Hats that represent the ranking...
