Either go with Men of the West, or Mountain Trolls for this.
2 ways with each:
Men of the west: -All out upgrades on swordsman, purchasing some other units, such as axeman and scout perhaps, scouts are needed almost always for those moments where you're about to lose and there is a lot of empty space
-Balanced upgrades, except on javelin throwers, in which you upgrade spear ro 3 or 4, and 3 or more accuracy for archers (it applies to them too)
Mountain Trolls: -All out upgrades on swordsman, until they're at level 5, and then save up for the troll itself; scouts and axeman possibly needed, not so much axeman as scouts, though.
-Purchase scouts, upgrade armor 4 or 5 times and send them out (before that point do whatever it takes to save up the money needed)
If using any other race, you basically want scouts, axeman, their special unit, and perhaps a mage. Mages aren't as useful as some of you may think, though, seeing as they can't be upgraded, and once it comes to demon fighting time, its all over for them. Upgrading archer accuracy helps more than you think.
