I came across this rule when someone claimed the message "You must wait 288 hours before posting in the forums" or something like that. I asked about the message, and the result was this comment on my profile:
The rule that you can't post in the forums for 288 hours after you sign up. I don't see the logic behind it!
That was Skeleton_Pilot answering my question about what the 288 hour rule was. However, since Skeletn_Pilot is just a normal user, I created this thread to confirm what the 288 hour rule is and why it exists. So:

What is the 288 hour rule and why is it there?
idk about it, probably becuase i didnt discover the forums untill 1 yr after i made my acount, lol.
I would recommend that he emails the staff this moment, copy-pasting the message he is getting, inform them of his username, when he signed up and ask them kindly to lift this for him. And perhaps suggest to them to add something about emailing them to their error message.
It is not a perfect way of removing the spammers, but it is working and it is probably somewhat better than removing the option to register entirely, but their way of communicating is rather bad, and it does not surprise me that no one thought to include some kind of explanation for newbies to what is happening and why, especially with the expanding timelimit.
So, make him email them from his associated email, include all information and they should be able to okay his account.
That's good, and it would be even better if the admins explained what happened.
Skeleton_Pilot said to me that he went on getsatisfaction and posted his problem. Then Larry made it so his account could post in the forums.
Now if you want to know why they have it in place, this is what joey said to me when I asked him:
We were getting spammed pretty badly so we had to put in some security locks in place for new users. We're hoping the spammers just give up eventually so we can turn them off. Just hang in there with us as we try get rid of these guys.
You say Larry updated your profile Ske - maybe because it's new, it's glitching.
That is possible!
What i mean is, the actual "forum ban" as such, isn't a glitch, but perhaps the extension is.
My theory is, the rule extends itself every few times you attempt to post something. I attempted posting many times while the rule was still in effect, and I noticed the extension would change only after I had attempted to post a few times.
Perhaps that's intentional, perhaps it isn't. I couldn't tell you one way or the other!

I'm guessing that was what happenened. perhaps if you had waited it out fully, then it wouldn't have extended the duration, and then allowing you to post freely. in a way this sounds like the internet form of say uncle, and it's a competition between spammers and the admins.

I look back and wonder what would have happened had I not attempted to post so many times. In the long run, I'm glad that I did so that this issue would be addressed! Had I been able to post earlier, I probably would have brought this up anyway!
24 hours should be plenty of time for a computer scan of a potential new member's email account to verify of the potential new member is human or not. Having to wait 288 hours or, 12 days is not only excessive but offensive and humiliating. If I were a new member I would look elsewhere to join or I would wait for AG3 to join.
Hopefully, this 288 hour rule will vanish before May much like the adbots were "oofed out of existence".
note: To poof them out of existence is a partial quote from a Frank Zappa song, Dumb All Over from the Have I Offended Someone? album.

To be honest, considering the nature of the spambots, it is almost cleverly done, if we assume the time double or so every time the user tries to post onto the forums. As such, the adbots would be giving themselves infinite house arrest. But, to be honest, it would probably be an idea to include some kind of safe measure to make sure innocents aren't caught in the net. Like a message about emailing the staff to get the ban lifted or something...
